Just on the Celtic v Qarabag game, Celtic TV didn't show the home leg live to their subscribers outside of Britain and Ireland as they usually do for home Champions League qualifiers - only announcing delayed video coverage of the game to all their subscribers earlier today. The match wasn't shown live in Azerbaijan either, so I guess this uncertainty about rights may have been a factor in why BBC Radio Scotland weren't able to confirm they were doing commentary until late in the day.
On BBC Radio 5 Live's new season coverage, while ITV will be screening Champions League highlights on Wednesday nights, which I imagine Mark Pougatch will be presenting, there's no reason why he won't/can't host 5 Live Sport on Tuesday nights during European weeks. So long as Pougatch is either studio-based or hosting from a British ground - and frankly in their current financial climate it'd be silly for 5 Live to send an on-air team larger than one lead commentator and one summariser to most club games played in continental Europe - then I'm sure he will be able to work Tuesdays for 5 Live and Wednesdays for ITV on a regular basis during European weeks.
Given BBC TV's loss of their Football League highlights rights, I wouldn't be surprised to hear Manish Bhasin turn up as a presenter on 5 Live Sport. Manish began his broadcasting career as a sports presenter on BBC Radio Leicester and has hosted shows on 5 Live in the past, so is no stranger to sports radio. For me, once you get past Marks Pougatch and Chapman, 5 Live Sport's presenting line-up isn't massively strong - Caroline Barker is pretty good but I've never particularly rated what I've heard of Jonathan Overend or Eleanor Oldroyd on football coverage and I've been a bit miffed by the rise of Will Perry, who never really stood out when he was a talkSPORT reporter. It'll be interesting to hear if George Riley and Kelly Cates, both of whom I do rate, become more prominent on Radio 5 Live in the wake of their appointment as Channel 5's Football League Tonight presenters.
I think most would accept 5 Live will need at least one new presenter for their Euro 2016 coverage, given that it is likely Pougatch will be leading ITV's coverage and Chapman will be splitting his time with BBC TV (if not working for them exclusively). To me it would make sense if that person was Bhasin, although Riley and Cates won't be working for Channel 5 in June and July, so their TV profiles might give them the edge.
Matt Smith had been mentioned as being a candidate to return to 5 Live once his ITV contract expired, but given that he's signed up to work on BT Sport's European coverage and has been presenting talkSPORT shows including The Press Pass on a number of occasions since June indicate that this looks less likely now. However, BT Sport won't be covering Euro 2016 and talkSPORT already have a strong live football presenting 1-2-3 of Mark Saggers, Adrian Durham and Ian Danter, which looks unlikely to change any time soon; so unless an overseas broadcaster makes him a good offer, I don't think it's inconceivable that Smith could turn up on 5 Live to fill a gap next summer.
