I was expecting this. It makes sense as Radio 5 Live signed a deal to cover Manchester United's home European games at the start of the season, which should encompass the Europa League as well as the Champions League. When talkSPORT did a similar deal with Liverpool initially for the Champions League a few years ago, they were able to do commentaries on their Europa League games once they dropped into that competition.

As for talkSPORT, they'll be doing commentary on Dynamo Kyiv v Chelsea on Wednesday but will be doing Around the Grounds on Tuesday as Arsenal are at home and thus far have nothing pencilled in for Thursday. They've been very unlucky in so much as all the English teams are at home for their second legs this week, had Tottenham away this week rather than last I'm sure they'd be doing their second leg. Obviously doing Manchester United at home is out of the question, but given their past deals like the one I mention, it'd be nice if talkSPORT picked up rights to Liverpool's home leg.

How did that work? Just by replacing the test transmissions with a simulcast of the main talkSPORT?

Interesting that 5Live are back their old habits of throwing money around .

Two commentators at today's Chelsea v Man City match when one is plenty.

So how much does it cost to send an extra commentator? Do you know? If you dont how can you say they are " throwing money around" I would guess the amount is negligble, hardly going to cost hundreds of pounds.

Unlike talkSPORT's presenters on Third and Fourth Round Sundays, Ian Danter stuck around to host the half-time segment during the 4pm game. Ian Abrahams provided a brief snatch of commentary on the closing stages of Tottenham v Crystal Palace, as he did at Reading v West Brom yesterday.

During his commentary, Sam Matterface mentioned that Jim Proudfoot and Stan Collymore will be commentating on the League Cup Final next Sunday. He'll be commentating on the earlier Manchester United v Arsenal league game (although doesn't know the co-commentator he'll be working with).

Murray and Green are staff so they get paid anyway and they probably don't even get many expenses.

I think that might be the first time 5Live has taken the option of covering a game up against Talksport's Sunday offering. They did this quite a bit when we were in the Europa league a couple of years back but I think the only other time 5Live has done it this season was the very first weekend of the season (was it Southampton v Newcastle?) Good move from 5Live as this match has a baring on the top of the table as well as (most unfortunately for me) the relegation places at the bottom.

Regarding BBC Radio 5 Live being able to provide commentary on Tottenham Hotspur v Swansea City on Sunday, I think it's worth baring in mind that Sunday is also League Cup Final day (which of course will be a commentary on both stations). Two years ago on League Cup Final Sunday, the final kicked off in the earlier timeslot and afterwards talkSPORT were allowed to do commentary on a 4pm Premier League game between Aston Villa and Norwich City, with Radio 5 Live covering whatever the first pick in that timeslot was that day as usual.

I imagine the Premier League takes into consideration how the kick-off time of the League Cup Final means league scheduling has to fit in around it and acts appropriately in allowing either station to broadcast any second choice league game taking place outside of their normal timeslot. I know 5 Live has been able to pick up secondary earlier kick-offs on regular Sundays as well, but on this specific day in the calendar it's a particularly sensible allowance.

talkSPORT also had Graham Beecroft working as their pitchside reporter at the Greenhous Meadow.

talkSPORT Live didn't provide their own bespoke coverage of this match. From a quick skim through their Listen Back service, I don't think Newstalk in Ireland took IRN's updates on any of the weekend's FA Cup Fifth Round ties.

Alan Biggs devoted his pre-match preview at the Middlesbrough game to paying a really nice personal tribute to Ali Brownlee, after which Ian Danter echoed his thoughts and added some memories of his own. Nice to hear national commercial radio broadcasters adding to the kind words said about Ali both locally and nationally on BBC channels.
