Last season, BBC Radio 5 Live switched commentary on a Saturday 12.45pm Premier League kick-off (if I remember rightly, a London derby involving two "big six" clubs, albeit one with no title or relegation implications hinging on it) over to Radio 5 Live Sports Extra in order to prioritise the final day of the Championship season. The switch was only made within a week of that Saturday, and beforehand I know a few of us had criticised the original plan and subsequently praised them for making the right call.

With Middlesbrough v Brighton being a straight shootout for automatic promotion, hopefully (surely?) they will make the same call this time around.

This is a bit after the Lord Mayor's Show, but both BBC WM and BBC Radio Lancashire had commentary on Walsall's fine win over Fleetwood Town (details to follow). It would have been good if Radio 5 Live Sports Extra could have carried one of these commentaries (under normal circumstances, it would be WM given Walsall were the home team), but they had live county cricket coverage on there at the time.

It will be interesting to see if Radio 5 Live/Sports Extra carry a commentary on the final day of the League One season on Sunday given that the Saddlers are still fighting for automatic promotion and Burton must get a point to go up should we put in another winning performance.

5Live are doing a Leicester special tonight, if they hadn't won the title over this weekend, Bayern/Atletico commentary was planned (I presume off tube). Can understand the decision to be honest especially as TS are covering the game.

can you put the commentary on sports extra if they've paid commentators and co-commentator to be available to commentate on it? Not that it really matters as you rightly say with it being on TS.
On another note (and I'm happy to be proved wrong) I'm 99 % sure 5Live didn't cover the end of the championship season on the last day last season. if memory serves, 5Live covered leicester v Newcastle instead with sports extra carrying commentary of Derby's game where they managed to throw away their play off place-- can't remember who they were playing. I think the season before however, 5Live did cover the end of the championship season with a prem game being moved to sports extra.

BBC London had Nick Godwin and Bradly Allen at Stanford bridge last night for Chelsea v Spurs. unusually for a week night, the game was caried on their DAB frequency as well as FM, presumably they decided to treat the bank holiday in the same way as they treat the weekends.

I think 5live should have gone ahead with the Bayern vs Atletico tie, it had the potential to be a classic, and it certainly was. They covered Leicester's Title win throughout the day, it was covered extensively by other BBC outlets.

Not trying to play down the magnitude of what Leicester did, but surely a live commentary of a CL semi final should take precedence? Yes talkSPOT had live commentary but it was not like Leicester's title win was not discussed extensively all day elsewhere.

I've had a look at this and last season the last day of the Championship season was on 2nd May - which means it would have clashed with Leicester vs Newcastle in the Premier League. I can't remember what Five Live did, but I wouldn't be massively surprised if Five Live stuck with the Premier League because Norwich vs Man U has plenty riding on it at both ends of the table.

This is always going to be the problem when there are so many televised Premier League games, it's always likely to be the case that the final set of Championship fixtures will clash with a Premier League game, which is a bit of a shame, but there doesn't seem to be much else they can do. I mean in the days of the ITV Sport Channel they played matches on Sunday teatimes to avoid Premier League matches but nobody liked that, so presumably it's decided that it's easier to play them at more convenient times, even if it goes up against Premier League games. Certainly it doesn't seem to make much difference the rest of the season.

I dunno, I think commentaries on British teams in the Europa League group stages are a higher priority than all-foreign Champions League ties, even if they're the semi-finals. I remember about a decade ago you wouldn't get commentary on Five Live of these games if they were all-foreign, you often got Angus Loughran reporting on the phone.

After further study, it appears that the situation being referred to by Diff was actually two seasons ago in 2014, where Five Live punted West Ham vs Spurs to Sports Extra, which had nothing much riding on it, in favour of the last day of the Championship season. That season, though, not only had the Premier League game had nothing much riding on it at all, but also Sky had made a ridiculous decision not to show Birmingham's match where they had to win to stay up, instead seeing if Brighton would get in the play-offs. So Five Live did commentary on Birmingham because it wasn't on telly at all.

BBC Leicester sent Ian Stringer to commentate on Chelsea v Spurs, and Jason Bourne was in a pub in Leicester with the fans.

Thanks Steve, clearly I'd gotten last season and the season before that mixed up as that was the set of matches I was thinking of. Given the situation you outline, clearly Radio 5 Live made the right choice then given that there was nothing more than local bragging rights riding on the Premier League game. However, I'm sure I recall them flipping their schedule plans well into the week of those fixtures.

While I know it's a lot less clear cut this time around, I do think 5 Live should prioritise the Championship given that Middlesbrough v Brighton & Hove Albion is a straight shootout for a place in the Premier League - while Norwich City are battling against relegation and Manchester United are aiming for a European spot, the match between the two won't be decisive like the game at the Riverside will be.

In the absence of a late change, if Boro v Brighton does go out on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra then I think the BBC should produce their own national commentary for this one. I'm a big fan of 5LSE's simulcasts of BBC Local Radio commentaries under normal circumstances, but for a game of such magnitude where they'll likely be a considerable national audience, it only seems right to me to offer a neutral, national service rather than the naturally slanted coverage that BBC Tees and BBC Sussex will rightly be providing their local audiences.

Given that the BBC had made the effort not just to pick up rights but to send Conor McNamara and presumably a summariser to Munich for the match, I think they should have provided some kind of commentary - although I can see the counter argument that it took exceptional circumstances for the schedule change and you can't blame them for wanting to focus on a story as big as Leicester City winning the Premier League.

I was going to suggest that commentary should have at least been transferred to Radio 5 Live Sports Extra - but having checked that schedule, they were providing commentary on the ATP Madrid Open tennis, with Andy Murray being on court at the time Bayern v Atletico was taking place. That's a really unfortunate clash - I'm not sure what I'd have done in the circumstances, many would argue that Murray as a British sportsperson should naturally take priority, but when you've made the effort to pick up rights and send a team out to the continent to cover a single major football match, it seems a bit rubbish to limit coverage to updates only. You can argue that Bayern v Atletico was on talkSPORT, so listeners wanting to hear it were well served elsewhere, but then coverage of Murray and the Madrid Open was on talkSPORT 2, which I imagine most listeners with access to 5LSE could have received.

Bit of a cheap shot, you always seem to draw attention to things like this. talkSPORT did "bother" cover last night's game with reports and by having an ex-Liverpool player in the studio, they've just taken the decision not to purchase commentary rights to individual European games played in Britain for whatever reason. Given the amount of money they've put into launching talkRADIO, Virgin and the superb talkSPORT 2, they have to allocate their funds wisely and so I can understand them not spending over the odds on commentary rights to single matches if they don't feel the price they command is good value for money. At least talkSPORT provided commentary on both of this week's Champions League matches after purchasing rights to them, unlike a certain other station!
