i think thats a mistake i think you should play the first 3 first you wont be as attached to the characters and know the back story and what theyve been through and all the nods and winks in the game to previous things that have happened. theres no rush we wont get another naughty dog game for a few years now and the first three are available on the ps4

I played the demo of Uncharted 2 and was bored senseless - that's why I never purchased the Drake collection. I purchased Uncharted 4 because the graphics looked good and the reviews were stellar. For me to start a new franchise on the last console the game has to be really good because i'm too used to current gen now.

I've reached Scotland and so far I like most of the characters and story but the game play is meh. That triangle button feels like a chore.

If you mean the constant pressing of the triangle button for certain interactions, you can change it in options so that you just have to hold it. Makes it way less annoying.

I think the trailers and reviews showed too much footage. Maybe I'm not far enough into the game yet (reached the first driving mission) but there are certain story beats that would have been nice to view as I was playing the game. My favourite sequence so far is the auction because dynamically it's different to the rest of the game both in gameplay and setting. And I like the idea of hiding in plain sight.

I enjoy the self awareness of the game - there was a point during the first driving mission where I thought, "let me guess, bridge is going to break" and when it didn't Nathan (Naughty Dog) sarcastically remarked, "well that was a nice change of pace. I'm actually a little disappointed." hehe

And lol at the Sony product placement at every turn. Embarrassing

An ok game so far...

I'm well trained in button mashing since Final Fantasy 8 in the late 90s. You had to mash square to power up your summons. So I didn't mind the occasional bit of button mashing in this at all.

Got up to Chapter 15 earlier and this game just continues to amaze me. Every inch of the places you find yourself in are polished and beautiful. Just simply amazing!

well finished uncharted 4 and i have to admit i didnt like it i know i should and i know it looks great and storys great and the characters are fantastic i just found it incredibly frustrating, annoying and just not fun to play. way way too much climbing (god i hate climbing in video games) so many times i didnt even know what i was supposed to be going to progress.

they got the ending right though

Must admit, this game is polished like the Queens silver, chapter 12 now, just exploring the islands and loving it, I could do this shit all day haha.

I'm really liking the multiplayer as well. I'm a bit addicted to it.

Up to chapter 17 on my crushing play through and I would say that it's not *quite* as fun to replay as the first three games because of the amount of time spent exploring or climbing without action. Still an amazing game but UC 2 and 3 were games I played over multiple times without getting bored.

The climbing is ok - the danger, grit and puzzle nature of it reminds me of what Assassin's Creed's climbing used to be for better and worse. The problem is that it's very inconsistent. Sometimes Nate will jump out a window and hang and then sometimes he will jump out the same window and fall to his death...

Anyway, finished it and I thought the game was fairly good but not deserving of the high praise it's getting. 10/10, Gamespot? lol

I think I bought into the hype. Wish I had purchased the game half price at a later date. Very rarely do I disagree with game reviews.

There are 3 or 4 stand-out/memorable sections - amongst them is the market/murderous truck set piece which the devs ruined by releasing that footage to the major gaming channels. What were they thinking spoiling something like that?

We spend far too much time on the beach during the third act. I appreciate that the devs initially broke it up with the second brothers flashback which was perhaps my favourite chapter in the game - it recalls the Left Behind DLC from LOU. However, the beach section needed more breaking up so that we're not looking at the same setting for 4 hours straight.

The graphics, motion capture and voice acting were great. If this could be applied to an open world game then that would be quite an accomplishment but we're at least a decade behind for that. The puzzles, the story, characters were superb and I found all the little details about Henry Avery's story almost as compelling as the main narrative itself. It's a good sign when you actually want to stop to read all the notes and journals left behind.

But there's a sameness and repetitiveness to the gameplay that can't be disguised by cinematic set pieces and this becomes all the more apparent during the beach chapters. If they combined the story telling, voice acting and mechanics of this game with the gameplay of Tomb Raider 2013 you'd have the perfect game.

Well the majority loved it, so it clearly does deserve high praise. But fair enough if you didn't think so. And you could probably sell the game and get most of your money back if you've feel you are done with it now.

You think UC4 would be better with the gameplay of TR2013 - a game that, as good as it was, unashamedly ripped off the Uncharted formula!

Not sure why Gamespot's score is lol worthy, you would have to take that up with many more review outlets. It's not like it was the outlier. But I understand your issues with it, I don't agree but I can see where you are coming from. I have seen plenty of people say the island section is too long, but it was actually my favourite part. I honestly didn't want it to end. Partly because finally turned up. It's interesting that you say it's too long in one type of area, and then bring up TR, because that whole game was one area, wasn't it an issue then?

When you say mechanics from Uncharted and gameplay from TR, what parts are you thinking of in particular? The only major difference I can think of is bow and arrow and levelling system. Did you have a gameplay issue with the other Uncharted's?

Not trying to pick apart your post or anything, I don't have a problem with your opinion, I just want to understand some of your points better.

And did it better. Uncharted stole Tomb Raider's concept and revamped it for the modern gamer, then Tomb Raider got Uncharted right back but with added elements of the Arkham games, Far Cry 3 and Assassin's Creed all culminating in a surprisingly awesome game.

No, it doesn't. TR 2013 is a semi open world which allows you to travel between many locations. The exploration aspect of it is better because it's not as linear.

If you're not picking apart my post, as you claim, then why do I need to give examples? The gameplay and mechanics are different and therefore that naturally creates preferences. What's hard to understand about that? Mechanics from Uncharted as in the entire way Nate moves in stealth, combat and exploration. Gameplay of Tomb Raider, for instance, the entire sequence to rescue Alex was super fun.


Why, so you can pick apart my issues with them too? I haven't played the other Uncharted games you'll be happy to know... except the Uncharted 2 demo which bored me.

Sorry, I don't know what I said to make you respond like that, I said I understand your issues right at the start of my post, and I respect your opinion though I personally disagree.

That's a good point about the open world aspect of TR, when I think back to it, I tend to just picture the island but then forget that you are able to jump from place to place within the environment. I like the claustrophobic feeling of TR, I guess that's one reason I liked the island stuff in Uncharted 4, being stuck in one place works for me for some reason.

I questioned the mechanics/gameplay point because I thought they were the same and I was just clarifying that we were thinking of the same thing. I would have thought Nate's movements in stealth were part of the gameplay, not a separate mechanic, which is why I asked.

No issue with this being your first Uncharted, I just wondered if you felt there should have been more progression from earlier games and if you felt this game was lacking in any areas in comparison to the others, or whether the story elements and call backs worked for you if you hadn't played the others.

Overall another great uncharted game, looking forward to trying out the multiplayer and playing again on hard....

Because you weren't trying to have a "discussion". You were trying to back me against a wall because you were annoyed that I liked Tomb Raider's gameplay better. You basically said I'm praising Tomb Raider's gameplay over Uncharted's "when they're the same!" except that they're quite different and you seeing it as the same is based on your interpretation of what you consider to be a "setting".

Whilst there are obvious similarities between TR and Uncharted, to apply the same gameplay and setting standard of a semi open world game to a linear one is strange.
I love roaming the beautiful city of Los Santos in GTAV doing various tasks, encountering random people but if those tasks weren't there and I was climbing the same walls, pulling the same ledges, pushing the same boxes over again with nowhere to go except ahead that would begin to bore me.

I'm glad you enjoyed the game overall - I did too. But I didn't enjoy the game as much as you did.

Now that it's been a couple of weeks since I completed UC4 and the dust has settled I've been thinking about it and I would probably say Rise Of The Tomb Raider just about edged it for me personally. Don't get me wrong I loved UC4 too and it will go down as one the games of the generation, best looking console game I've ever played too, but I just found the general gameplay and combat of Rise more to my liking. There's not much in it though and I just consider myself lucky I've been able to play two such great games in the space of six months.

That isn't what I said at all. I never said Uncharted and Tomb Raider have the same gameplay. I was talking about the term mechanic, it's part of the overall gameplay, this is just talking about the terms. In my mind they are the same thing. Apologies if I worded it badly in my last post.

When you said combine the mechanics of Uncharted with the gameplay of Tomb Raider, I basically asked if you could say what your ideal mixture would be, as I wasn't sure what exactly you meant. You gave saving Alex as an example of gameplay you liked in Tomb Raider, I thought that was considered level/scenario design. The reason I asked in the first place was so I could be on the same page as you.

As to me being annoyed that you like Tomb Raider more, and trying to back you into a corner........ lol no. I bought the PS3, and Definitive edition on PS4, and RotTR is one of my most anticipated games this year, i'm hardly upset you like it more than Uncharted. Although I wish I'd never asked you about it, I really didn't think it would be a problem.

I actually do like the gameplay better in Tomb Raider, it feels a lot better especially in combat. But I like the characters and story better in Uncharted. Both good games in their own right though.

If the writers from NG worked on a TR game, that would be glorious. I don't really have any negatives about TR gameplay and combat. Other than I felt there was a little too much of it, and I wanted more puzzles/tombs. It was more of a balancing issue if there was one. The bow and arrow never got old in TR, and the pick axe was a great platforming tool.

With Uncharted, I think they perhaps slowed the pace a little too much. 2 is still my favourite, I think it's the one I will return to most. But the story of 4, with all the callbacks are where it shines for me, I had nostalgia overload at times.

Anyone else attempting crushing? I have to say I'm finding it tough, and i'm only on chapter 11.

I think stealth felt more satisfying in Tomb Raider and was easier because the bow and arrow didn't make a sound, I didn't feel like there was too much combat but agree maybe there should have been more puzzles. I'm kinda hoping in the next one we get to travel about a bit more, because being on the same island did get a bit boring near the end.

I won't be playing Uncharted 4 on crushing, I hardly play games on hard now because I just wand to take it easy and I can't enjoy a game if I'm dying a lot. But I will be replaying it again at some point. I've been playing Uncharted 2 again and although it was my favourite, I think 4 is now because of the story is more engaging.

Yeah, the bow and arrow was great for stealth. I felt like a boss with that thing. ND did stealth better in The Last of Us than they did in uncharted, but it was good enough. They couldn't shove every Last of Us mechanic into Uncharted. Stealth is the only way I am getting through it on crushing. I'm not a trophy whore, but when I really like a game, I have to try and get the platinum. I have the other 3, plus Golden Abyss on Vita. I feel like I need the set. It's always difficult for me because to be honest, i'm not that good lol. You sound much more sensible lol.

I haven't looked at much Tomb Raider stuff on purpose. Especially with it already being out on XBox. All I know is it starts on a mountain, you learn Greek by looking at walls or something, and there are supposed to be more puzzles. I've also heard lot's of good things so i'm really looking forward to it.
