No PAYG so you have to take out a contract? Yeah, we'd need someone with a contract then

I think P3 research had an article that said the UK was behind in rural coverage even voice.
I've just noticed actually on Vodafone DE's website it tells you the average speed you can expect in a location on the simple version of their coverage map. It seems to work it out from the average speed in a location, very interesting. |

How much better would 700MHz be at penetrating walls when compared to 800MHz?
Is there a consistent numerical relationship between frequency and penetrative abilities? Obviously lower frequency = higher penetration but what sort of relationship is it? |

Germany seems to have better voice but roughly the same 3G, the 4G rollout being ahead of ours.

I wonder if our networks could ever consider showing estimates based on the huge amount of RootMetrics data they have, or in the case of Three the Ookla data it gets from every speed test we do?
I do wonder how much difference it would make sales wise, especially if it doesn't give a good result for your area. Would be nice to explore the country and see though. |

In Sweden now and using an app called nPerf which sort of proves that Three blocks streaming.
https://youtu.be/C2OtkoAGVrU I've done many tests but only uploaded one, and none of them work - not even a 240p clip. No issue with my Vodafone SIM. But I do recommend everyone that goes abroad using Feel at Home installs nPerf and try for themselves as I'd love to see evidence of it working for someone! |

They have a standard response. We all know what it will be. Even if I did 1000 tests all over the world, they'd still blame local conditions.
Even if I do a test on a local SIM, other networks, with VPNs, they'll still argue it could have been a bad day etc. All they need to do is say there's no hard block, and nobody can really prove otherwise. But if everyone starts using this app when they roam, it will be harder to keep this lie going. In any case, even if there was a 0.1% chance of it working, would that be acceptable? |

Jon, how is the VPN holding up? still unblocked? Not sure they can block this particular one :P
My Vodafone SIM meanwhile gives me 30-70Mb and no issues. |

With roaming prices reducing, I cannot see myself using Three's £5 per day deal again. I've also got myself the Vodafone 20GB deal for my work phone. Their roaming is perfect for my needs and worth paying (slightly) more for.

Excellent video Jon! Looks like Vodafone come up trumps when travelling in the EU, not throttling or traffic shaping.
Next time I'd like to have more SIMs (O2, iD etc). |

I think EE would be fine too, but given it has the ability to slow speeds on the daily add-on plan, it may still not be properly comparable if you only get 100MB at full speed!

If you buy a fixed amount of data on EE, I'd expect it to work totally unhindered. On Three with a MBB SIM, if you bought nnMB of data, I'm still inclined to believe it may be managed.
With the daily option on EE, you are speed limited after 100MB. EE does at least make this clear though. The problem is that it's expensive to buy data for use abroad, but soon it will be down to around 4/5p a MB so it may not be such an issue anyway for many people - assuming you turn off background data and don't want to stream anything. |

Do the new EU laws on net neutrality mean Three shouldn't be throttling non social media sites like they admit to do?

That is actually a good point. I'm interested in folks views on this as well.
https://ec.europa.eu/digital-single-...net-neutrality Any one wanting to take the legal route with Three? |

I'm currently in the USA roaming on T-Mobile. The data speeds are so bad on my iPhone it barely loads. Loading Google maps is a nightmare and slow... So AT&T GoPhone SIM it is.

Can you download nPerf and run it please? I'd like to see the streaming score/performance. As I'm sure would others.

http://edition.pagesuite-professional.co.uk//launch.aspx?eid=3c4b5a7d-79ee-4c77-bb0c-94d68cbcb85d Three is looking to launch a premium addition to Feel at Home that will allow customers to access faster speeds. More importantly it quotes: "Topley confirmed that Three does throttle speeds adding "we position this proposition as a holiday product..." |

They don't see a lot of people streaming abroad because they can't!!!!
Good to see that all my moaning has been vindicated. I wonder if Three will talk to me again anytime soon considering everything I accused them of doing (despite repeated denials, which still exist online to customers who complain) was true. I am somewhat surprised they consider everyone roaming to be on holiday, and presumably didn't mention that when you pay £5 a day elsewhere in Europe you're still throttled. But it's a start. Clearly by next June, the neutrality rules will effectively force Three to stop throttling and blocking services.. but even if it didn't, the competition will all be allowing full access - so people going abroad aren't going to accept 3G only roaming with speeds throttled to a fraction of a megabit. |
