For those in France at the moment, how are speeds across the three roaming partners? i.e. is there a difference in observed experience of Bouygues, Orange and Free?

I've been on Bouygues about 95% of the time and found it to be good. Occsssional poor speeds. Always 3G. Only time i've been on Orange was when there was no Bouygues signal which as above was about 5%.

Orange France for me has been really very good for data speeds for me, Bouygues also but to a lesser degree for me and Free well forget it.

Friend of mine went to Italy, said WIND was the better option being much faster, he even got signal in the rural areas which are around the Bay of Naples (I've no idea how rural that actually is but it sounds rural) , although he got annoyed by the throttling of streaming.

Personally I've used it in Vienna, where it was good, not as good as the network back home but still very good, noticed at the time traffic seemed to be routed back through London, although this may have been my imagination.
Yes the WIND 3G coverage is great around the rural areas. Briefly lost signal for a few seconds and then it came back, so handy when navigating through the mountains of Italy .

Traffic is routed back through the UK as your still assigned UK IP Address, as for streaming being throttled to useless there is a VPN service for that but I won't post here, PM me if you want to know.
Hi I was wondering what particular VPN you use as occasionally things slow down quite a bit. woops I will PM you.

VPNs for everyone!

But seriously I wonder if this is an agreement with the roaming networks or if they're just cheating out on it all.

Bouygues works best for me, currently near Nice. Free is only available in larger cities. Orange always stays on 'E' and when on H+ it's not as fast as Bouygues.

From the speedtest I've done, Bouygues gets around 12Mbps, Orange 4Mbps and haven't been able to get any coverage from Free.

Would you mind PM'ing it to me too? Cheers

Tricky with speeds, I am roaming right now in New York and get speeds of about 4-5Mbps.

However if i access the Play Store/App Store to download an app or go onto PocketCasts to download an audio show it takes FOREVER!!
As I said when I was in Paris, Play store downloads take ages - and seem to stop at times. But use 'a' VPN (as I know you've been doing from our chats!) and not only does video work, but you get decent speeds there too.

Speed test isn't restricted, so you can get amazing speeds, but then find it hard to utilise the speeds. Given Three wants you to send Tweets and Facebook updates about your holiday abroad and all the money you're saving, it seems that these services (and presumably others like WhatsApp) aren't restricted at all.

Start doing file transfers or try and watch video and all bets are off. Mind you, while you can't watch YouTube, it does seem you can view videos on (Google) Photos.

It's a bit of a mess, and I wonder if Three will be allowed to restrict services from 2017 with the whole net neutrality rules? I mean, Three is clearly blocking Netflix, YouTube and so on.

Without the VPN
Really? Never had YouTube work without the VPN, in France, Denmark or Sweden (the three most recent destinations for me).

Does any decent VPN work or is it only a specific provider?

I'd be interested in the VPN too if that's ok?

General browsing may be ok in most places, but try and do something else, like check in for a flight or download a podcast and everything just grinds to a halt.

Have Three ever admitted any throttling?

It is 1 specific VPN that works only... 3 really have worked hard to get the VPN protocols throttled to useless!

Three admit to throttling VPNs at the very least. I presume some variant of Trafficsense does the rest.

It's odd that they effectively block YouTube and Netflix. It's not as if it just buffers and streams slowly. It just doesn't work FULL STOP.

Go to Sweden, load Netflix, choose a film or show, select and that's it - spinning circle and nothing. Not in 10 seconds, 20 seconds, 30 minutes. [Activate a VPN or use local Wi-Fi and it's all good to go]

Facebook, Twitter, Speedtest.net - all fine, no throttling at all. It's like Three wants these all to work brilliantly.

Download a new app/game (or just do an update) and you'll swear blind you've roamed on to a legacy O2 GPRS site.

There's nothing that I can see on the Three site that points out that Feel at Home isn't quite like being at home, unless you can't transfer files, watch YouTube or other video services in the UK too?

Three has always stated the following on their website:
