Ah I see. What was the reason you couldn't see the 4G coverage of E-Plus/O2, was it because you couldn't connect or was it nonexistent?
Reception in the U and S Bahn is good to hear, if only the mobile project for the underground wasn't scrapped even if it would have been difficult considering the gauge of the tunnels. |

E-Plus and o2 from my Three SIM. I was going to get some free SIMs whilst I was there but they're a maul to activate so I couldn't be bothered - I was on my hols after all! E-Plus 4g is crap from my research, it's on 1800MHz but only in major cities.

Sorry to disappoint, just looked at what was available, didn't want to pay the big roaming fees so just used free wifi where I could. There were a couple of things I liked that I forgot to mention, reception in the U-Bahn and S-Bahn even deep underground and the fact that I didn't bump into loads of people on the street texting like I usually do when I'm in Manchester or London! They didn't seem to use phones like that.

That might be true for the data allowance in Germany, but you tend to get your "unlimited" text messages and calls. So that's not stopping people.

I didn't say they aren't more expensive. But still most include more than enough text messages. I was just trying to point out that the reason for lightspeeds' experience isn't down to people not having enough inclusive text messages. Quote:
It's funny you mention Germany

I hope Germany can be added to Feel At Home in time for IFA (that's September 2nd Three, if you're reading)...

Even if they would announce it soon/now, won't it take too long till you can actually use it? Can't remember the exact dates, but weren't Spain and New Zealand announced three months before they became Feel like home countries?

Yes, I'm expecting to pay the £5 a day or else get a local SIM so I can use 4G data AND tether. I'm there four days, two actually at the show, so it's not going to cost that much anyway.
EE may have launched its own EU data roaming by then though, although I'm a little confused as to how it's all going to work (lots of options and speeds - you'll need to pay like Vodafone, not Three). Plus I am not sure when EE will be announcing that either. |

I've just bloody got back from there as well. Still I've got stuff over there so I'll be back before long, that's what happens when you do German and Scandinavian studies lol. Cheapest deal I've found Jon when doing research for local SIM is Aldi-Mobile, although it's a PITA to activate.
I wonder whose network Three would do Feel at Home with, I'm guessing E-Plus. Please tell us more jabba you've piped my interest. |

Yes, I think it is a PITA to get a prepay SIM in Germany. Was considering going to a company like this: https://www.prepaidzero.com/product/...b-prepaid-sim/
That should suffice, as I will have Wi-Fi access in the press room and back at the hotel. It will be 4G data then. Actually, the EE data pass thing might suffice too now. Not sure about the whole 100MB for £3 and 400MB extra for 'free' but slower. How slow? GPRS speed?! |

That is quite expensive. I pay 14.90€ for 3GB (4G) on Simyo, but I know there is a problem of getting the SIM card.

Looking at that website it's actually a Lebara sim they send you for some reason that's limited to 7.2Mbps.
The activation is a maul but for most can usually be done online. For PAYG MVNOs the only network to offer 4g is E-Plus at the moment but Vodafone and o2 offer it for a surcharge I think on their own offerings but they're bloody expensive. |

Just had a look for Vodafone PAYG:
9.99€ for 500 MB (4G), unlimited text messages and calls to Vodafone and mix of 200 minutes/text messages to landlines and other networks. At least you could just go to a shop and get the SIM there and then (I did it before and had to show passport and give address of hotel). But knowing Jon morris that allowance would be good enough for 1 hour

No trip to Germany would be good without a foreign network speed test comparison right? It is worth noting that Vodafone DE PAYG LTE is limited to 21.6Mbps. Presume that is to keep network capacity down.

Despite doing speed tests all the time, I doubt I'll have time for my short visit. But I'll no doubt be back in Germany later in the year.

so far this year they have only added Spain and New Zealand. It all started very quickly and things have definitely slowed down. I doubt we'll see any other countries any time soon. |

If it's 3 quid for 100MB but with 400MB free, at a lower speed, that might suffice for when I don't have Wi-Fi, but how slow will it be?

I think if you're going to a european destination for longer than a few days, the old method of buying a bundle of data for 7 days (e.g. 200mb for 7 days for £12) was actually cheaper. Wonder if that's still available once you've opted in.
200MB wouldn't last me a week abroad. I used 3.2GB last time I was in Tenerife lol |
