ED's summer stunt has reached the 18th day of filming:

Duncan Foster ‏@duncanfo

Day 18 #emmerdale summer spectacular. Massive "cause" Hollywood "effects". Biggest ever on British Soap. The crew and cast are smashing it.

Day18. For the record "we smashed it" #crew #cast #emmerdale

18 days of filming for a stunt! That is incredible for a show that films six episodes a week

I'm really intrigued about this stunt. Could it really be bigger than the plane crash?

I love Emmerdale, but do not think any of the stunts will ever top the plane crash. The plane crash was brilliant at the time and very emotional. I am interested to see what this stunt involves though. I have said before though, I hope Emmerdale does not go down the route with a stunt every year. That would be too much.

Not liking this at all. This is sounding more and more like style over substance.

The poster was being nice and wishing Emmerdale luck, even though they do not watch the show. I do not see a problem with that. I think it is gracious.

Two things spring to my mind.

1 - why would the show put so much time, effort & resources into something to be shown on tv at a time when audiences are at their lowest.

2 - If so much time is being taken up to film this stunt spectacular, will this reduce the time & effort being put in for following episodes.

actually Toni was using the same term that Danny Dyer used when he was having a dig at the soap.

The plane crash was exceptional in a soap; it wasn't over one or two episodes either, but went on and on; the whole set was razed and filmed to give a fortnights storylines; it was huge. If they top that itll be outstanding. However, the modern way is to "big up " everything..... so we'll see. ..

Don't see what the issue is, it was once called Emmerdale farm and there are two or three farms shown in the program.

I do think it's somewhat strange to be doing this stunt in the summer when audiences can drop significantly on a hot day. But I love that ED doesn't shut up shop for the summer and still delivers great drama unlike some of the other soaps. They need to really advertise this well if it's as big as it sounds.

I think Emmerdale are playing clever here. Doing a huge stunt in the summer might not get them massive ratings but the ratings will go up somewhat. The extra people who do watch for the stunt may hang around weeks months afterwards going into the autumn and winter and keep the ratings higher.

Maybe it's a repeat of Eastenders famous Fairground Disaster

I wonder when we will find out what the stunt is? In some ways I really want to know and in others I don't

I love Eastenders but they're better off concentrating on their strengths which are pretty much issue led storylines.

Emmerdale are probably the best of the soaps at stunts entwining fantastic drama too.

It might give them a ratings spike
Big stunts / live episodes have given both EE & CS a ratings spike this year - but in the end, a ratings spike is all it was - with both shows falling back to current levels fairly quickly afterwards.
But it'll be harder for ED to create a ratings spike mid-summer when the tv audience isn't at it's maximum availability.

They held the big storyline last year with Donna's death & Aaron's return around the same time as this stunt will air, and didn't really see any long-term benefit - indeed, the show sank into it's worst Xmas ratings period ever recorded.
The ran the much publicised "Katie's death" storyline last January / Feb - and didn't even create a ratings spike from that.

At the end of the day, what holds viewers attention is strong narratives with believable characters.
The aftermath narratives to this stunt will be more important than the stunt itself.

The narratives need to be stronger than the silly plot twist of Charity dropping a baby 8 months after the storyline where the conception was supposed to have happened!

It's not an issue for me, although it would be pretty disingenuous for anyone to try and suggest that Dyer's reference to 'The Farm Soap' was anything other than a childish and slightly pathetic dig at ED.
