I Pod touch 6
secretagent
05-07-2015
Hi,
It's not very often that I wander into the gadget section, so I apologise if I'm not in the correct bit.
I'm interested in buying an I Pod touch as a birthday present at the end of the month and when I had a quick Google to see if we were still up to the 5th generation I Pod, I noticed that there was quite a bit of talk about an upcoming 6th generation but I couldn't find any information about when this will be available in the UK. I'm hoping that there is someone in the know on here who might know something. It would be just like me to purchase one model only to have an all singing, all dancing version be released the week after.
Many thanks
Stig

There could be a new one out in the next few weeks, but nobody really knows. There is a good summary of the latest rumours here:

Just launched today, it's available to buy on apple's website from £159 for 16gb, up to£329 for 128gb.

Was hoping for a new 160gb. Hopefully by the time my classic finally packs in the 128gb might be a little cheaper.

The decision what 32 gb of music to leave of will be a bit of a bummer though.

Pleased to see this. I've always liked the iPod Touch, it does a lot of what the iphone does (communications aside) without people having to get into a contract. the A8 is a good addition, it should make it whizz through multitasking!

1136 x 640 screen and no GPS. But a good competitor to the Sony Vita?

I checked my local Currys, Argos and Apple Premium Resellers shop for the new iPod Touch 6 but unfortunately they only sell the iPod Touch 5G model which is almost out of stock. I wonder when those shops will start selling the new 6G model. I was looking forward to the 128GB version but unfortunately it's only limited to the online and retail Apple Store.

Is the one on the Apple store definitely the new version (I'm hopeless about this sort of thing), it doesn't say 6th generation and I don't want to get the wrong one?
Sorry about all the lame questions and thanks for your help.

Yes, as already pointed out above. Apple only sell the latest ones on their website.

FYI, John Lewis and Currys are now selling them online too (surprised Amazon doesn't have them yet) . All priced identical, but you get a 2-year warranty with John Lewis, as opposed to Apple's standard 1-yr. If you want the 128gb and/or red versions, you can only get those from Apple.

I think I'll wait until next month before buying mine as I'm hoping there'll be some cases made specifically for the Ipod Touch 6G by then. I know the 5G ones fit, but all the ones I've seen have a hole in the back for the 5G loop, which the 6G doesn't have.

I was tempted by a 128Gb version, untill I saw the price markup between the 16Gb and 128Gb versions - £170 How can that be justified when a fast 128Gb MicroSD card can be got for £53 retail?

I may upgrade my 5th generation one as the A5 is terribly slow. I use my IPod as a back up to my IPhone 6 as the battery only lasts a day on them these days. For every day tasks the lag is awful on the 5th generation. The A8 should mean it should be quick for maybe two years.

Thanks for all your help. I made a decision and bought one from the online Apple store with free engraving. Hope the present is appreciated.

Had a look at these instore, very nice and incredibly light, but you could pick up a really good android phone for the same price(s), eg a Sony z2 for £200, or even a Moto e 2015 edition from only £69 (I have both, both great phones, the z2 has great tech, for the money the Moto e is amazing value and small and light

I had an iPod Touch 5 when they first came out, loved it at the time, but things have moved on SO much.

Just as a FYI, Tesco Direct is awarding triple clubcard points on all new range ipods until tomorrow (27th).

Maybe so, but the battery life won't be comparable, and who the hell wants to be disturbed by a phone when listening to music? Ipods are still around for very good reason. Oh, and Windows Phone kicks Android's botty.

My 64GB iPod Touch 5th gen still serves me well. I only really use it for playing music and streaming Spotify so I don't think I'll be upgrading anytime soon. I still find it very fast and snappy even 3 years on and the battery is holding out well.

I've just got one today (6th gen) and the quick way to tell is it should have an 8 megapixel camera!. Hope that helps. It's GREAT!

It's great for music but for pictures it's very laggy loading photos and web browsing is slow.

I guess Apple usually slow things down to make people upgrade.
