There is no ambiguity here, no need for a 200 pager, it can be summed up in a single sentence; it's unlicensed and it's not official Star Trek.

As I said, it's not the 'HD' bit that was the problem.

Why is it a bootleg? It looks official to me.

It's exactly the same as what Axanar is doing and I assume what is going to end up getting these fan film productions shut down. CBS make it clear that they can't 'sell' anything contain Trek copyright material.

The Blu-ray is only official in the sense that it's released by the creators of Renegades. It's not an official CBS/Paramount release by any stretch of the imagination.

Besides, I doubt these guys will be getting the discs professionally pressed. The most likely option is that these will be burnt onto BD-Rs.

I just hope it doesn't affect the reputable fan films/series which are presented honestly by fans who love the series, rather than cash-in merchants.

so here we go. who do u wanna see cast in the reboot.

heres MY PITCH: set in the 25 century. starring Christian bale as the captain. the starship U.S.S TITAN.
also featuring Emily van camp, Emilia Clarke, Idris Elba, Tricia Helfer and Willem Dafoe.
and we can have the enigmatic Neil Patrick 'NPH' Harris as the omnipotent Q. (maybe this is a different Q).

guest appearances from Trek alumni will occur and the occasional spooky resonance of John Delancie's voice will continue to follow the Titan around the galaxy wherever it goes.

what do you think?”

It would be absolutely amazing! Good initiative.

I'VE HAD A SUDDEN IMPULSE.

stylistically i'd like it to be most like TNG but I would like it if it had some of the DS9 war elements. DS9 was the only one that did justice to the concept of large scale fleet battles. it would be good if we had an entire season with a war story arc. maybe against the borg - but that might be a bit ambitious.

I think the rebooted film franchise of the last few years has made a new TV series more unlikely. All previous films and TV series followed a narrative thread from the original 1960's TV show.

But the new films have basically gone back over that ground, so where does a new TV series pick up from ?

Set in the prime universe after the destruction of Romulus. The Vulcans petition star fleet for the romulans to join Star Fleet; their request is refused. Consequently the Vulcans form an alliance with the romulans, a move which destabilises the federation. A civil war erupts, from which emerges the xenophobic earth empire, whilst a considerably weakened inter-planetary alliance, centred on Andoria is also created, and must fight to survive in an increasingly hostile environment. Can this small alliance overthrow the earth government and reform the federation....

This may be something that is clear to those who know, but it always seems like in licensingland there's rights for hats, t-shirts, postcards, stickers, cartoons, comics, live-action films, live-action TV shows, public appearances, use of quotes out of context, fair use, unfair use and of course carefully planned completely accidental photobombing. And presumably lunchboxes too

That's why it would be 200 pages, regardless of the simple fact you stated - and there would be people arguing over a modified starfleet badge needing a licence or if it was different enough and did they get permission from the patent-holder for the use of things with rounded corners?

As regards any new series, any based on a 'dream team' will be a disappointment partly because of the jokes about retirement but mainly because it should be about story and character, not actor. I'd prefer an entire cast of unknowns if it means we don't keep getting 'clever nods to fans of previous work'.

I see that Axanar have posted an update concerning 'issues' with CBS.

http://www.axanarproductions.com/axanar-and-cbs/

Quote:
“They told us that we are certainly doing more than any fan film before and that has some people concerned. We also discussed that CBS will not tell us what we either CAN or CANNOT do for legal reasons. They are very clear that they do not want to give guidance because it could negatively impact their IP rights. Yes, we are left to make assumptions and if we cross the line the lawyers will let us know.”

Which I think perfectly highlights not just the licensing issue but also the 'secret knowledge' problem - we won't tell you where the line is but you will know when you've crossed it because that's when we open fire...

Yes. Basically CBS wants to retain a completely freehand to deal with it's IP however it wants. The only 'grey areas' are the ones that CBS create themselves, they have the right to shut down anything that references Star Trek or the universe in any way, however slight.

It does make me wonder if Axanar removing the Star Trek name and avoiding using too much other existing Trek IP really has any value. I don't think CBS cares to the extent that something is 'Star Trek' or not; rather it cares how it is used. If you are running a commercial operation or risk devaluing the brand in any regard then CBS are going to sue you, regardless of whether you are drawing attention to the fact you are Trek or not.

BTW maybe I'm being anal but I don't think a new series would have to be set in Abram's universe- even if it is officially CANON.
heres why.....

star trek advocates multiple universes/parallel universes etc. in fact I'm pretty sure it advocates the many worlds' theory. to me this effectively mean anything that can happen is occurring in a 'universe'. remember (one of the better season 7 episodes of TNG) where thousands of enterprises appear all from slightly different timelines/ universes. There was one where 'alternate riker' was screaming that the borg had taken over the federation??? plus all the mirror universe episodes across the 5 shows.

remember in back to the future 2 where biff created the alternate timeline but then they fixed it?

simply put any future show could just conveniently choose to stay within the universe of the prime timeline. and the official explanation will be that Abram's universe is simply a tangent universe.

PRIME TIMELINE ALL THE WAY!!!!

As someone who joined the Star Trek party late (currently watching DS9 and Voyager on Blue-Ray), I have to say that the franchise works better as a TV show that it does as a motion picture.

Pleased that a new series will be coming in early 2017 but disappointed it won't be shown on Free to Air TV.

I'd like the new series to be something different........if they just did the exploring new worlds scenario it just might feel a bit samey

I'd like to see more of a political drama centred on Federation HQ with factions divided by different philosophies of how the Federation should move forward after some cataclysmic event (which could be contained in the wham bam double episode opener)...........the political machinations could work themselves out against the background of events in a far off quadrant so we can still have some red hot alien action

Really exciting.

My original plot thrust is brutally simple and yet compelling...

A sort of 'Maze Runner in Space' cum 'Lost' cum 'Waywant Pines'.

This means a crew of a starsrhip awaken and find their ship in a boxed-in mini galaxy that has about 50 planets in it but which has HARD borders and margins. This is also a paralaxx mini-galaxy so that if you go off the edge at one end you emerge in the other side - in other words there is no escape.

The boxed-in universe also has MAZE qualities to it. To get from planet to planet involves solving riddles and challanges. When the ship gets to each planet they find many bizzarre civilisations and creatures which try to trick them into staying on each planet.

The crew (EVERY WEEK) have to land on each planet, solve puzzles, escape and find a new path to the next planet. Only by collecting clues and archifacts from all planets will they assemble the secrets to escaping back to their own universe.

An extra dimension would be the ROVERS - a mysterious and relentless alien horde race which is also tracking them, moving to intercept them and trying to unlock the same secrets to escape.

This will be a mind blowing ploty and story. Lots of hard sci-fi and loads of action and mystery.

I have had these ideas for a while and have already committed loads of it to papers and Ami-Pro files. I have often thought about maybe senting these to Desilu |Studios.

The news here is good, though I haven't got a whole lot of optimism where the producer is involved; I think any show with him at the helm will suffer from script, continuity and consistency.

What we do need though is a reboot (yes, another one). Not the Roddenberry universe, and not the JJverse (that can remain, though in feature film only). A new TV show should stand alone and be its own universe. I'm hoping for something dark and gritty with a little humour thrown in. ST: Enterprise had the right idea there, though for whatever reason it didn't stay afloat.

We need a new crew, a new ship, a new mission. None of this Utopian rubbish. The existing shows and films will remain classics, but we need to move away from those now.

Perhaps one where the hu-maans are still finding their way around the interstellar community and weird places though there's the danger of too much peril-of-the-week that might get in the way.

Definitely plenty of scope for the imperfect technology, 'oh bugger the teleport is on the blink again this is the third time this month you ended up with my boobs anyone else would be getting suspicious'.

Or even a cop or patrol type show, as our traders take their first faltering steps into the worlds of piracy and smuggling, with official blind eyes being turned on particular products because the Prime Directive is a one-way street, we will happily accept the super space laser if someone has one spare but we will not let anyone primitive have a go on it.

spaccanauts idea is a bit whacky.
I think that idea of being in some parallel galaxy or bizarre maze/ void could work well as a standalone episode. maybe at an extreme stretch like a 5-parter. but no way could they drag that out for an entire show- no way in hell. imagine 7 seasons of that concept.

I like the idea of 'the rovers' though. I think we need to have the presence of a powerful group of aliens in the background- i.e the Q continuum or the prophets. handled skilfully I like that idea very much.

Been there, done that got the T-shirt.

As I said to you in the other thread why do another planet of the week series?

Apart from the suggestion I made in that thread. How about Star Trek: The Worf Chronicles. Klingons moving from being a warrior race to one exploring creates the conflict sufficient to make an interesting series.

A new Star Trek tv series is something I've waited/ hoped for since Enterprise ended after 4 seasons. The 'reboot' movies of recent years have not really felt like they fitted in properly for me. I VERY excited by this news though.

This is fantastic news - would love something gritty like Battlestar

Can't wait!
