Hi I was wondering if anybody on here has tried this or uses it as looking at purchasing some to try. Does it taste alright or is it more like a horlicks type drink.

Barleycup - now that's a blast from the past.

If it's anything like it used to be then best avoided. It's hard to describe - it's like weak watery coffee with hints of horlicks, and a nasty aftertaste.
A bit like camp coffee too -

It used to be sold a lot in wholefood shops and still is I guess.

Update: I have decided to try a few different substitutes, one being Barleycup the other two being Nestlé Caro Extra & Bambu. Tried the Caro Extra today and must say it isn't bad, has a mild coffee taste to it. So far so good but looking forward to trying the other two.

Just tried Barleycup and it is delicious. Has a great caramel aroma and taste especially when you add milk to it .

Cool
As I said above, I was never a fan but it was always around the place at my parents' house and at my gran's.

There seemed to be a lot more hot beverages about in those days - not just tea and coffee - but Horlicks, Ovaltine, Drinking Chocolate, cocoa, barleycup, camp coffee etc.

Those things are still available I know but people don't seem to buy them as much perhaps?

I think it was because houses were generally colder so you needed to warm up with a hot drink. Even as a small child in the early 1980s I remember our house being freezing on the coldest days, and we had central heating! Houses, and places generally were colder! (in my opinion!)

Plus health - people are more conscious about calories etc so drinking loads of milky drinks like Ovaltine, Horlicks etc is probably seen by some as "fattening".

I like it. It definitely benefits from adding more milk than you would in instant coffee.

I love it mixed with drinking chocolate powder (1 teaspoon of each),
with half hot water/half hot milk. It's a less sweet alternative to hot chocolate. (A bit mocha-ish).
