Good basic phone with keypad

Hi Everyone,

I've used Nokia basic phones all my life up to a few months ago when I've changed to a hand me down iphone 4 (my first smart phone)

In short, I don't like it. I find it more difficult to txt using the touch screen, and a lot of things are more complicated than on the Nokias I had. I'm not bothered about apps, I just want basic internet access that will let me check football scores and maybe e-mails/facebook.

It doesn't have to be a smart phone, however internet that's quick and has a good display would still be an advantage, I'm not sure if any non smart phone can provide this?

I don't want to spend more £100 on the phone, does anyone have any recommendations?

My priorities are a keypad, long battery life and simple to use. A good camera would be an advantage too.

Thanks, Chris.

It's a hard task, no smartphone really provides that except the blackberry options, but they're fairly expensive. For your budget I'd suggest perhaps one of the old Nokia flagships, N95 8gb or something like that.

You could consider the Nokia 301. It has the 3 priorities you mentioned, keypad, long battery life (compared to smartphones) and simple to use. Plus has a 3.2 MP camera, and internet access.

Three sell the Samsung S5611 'Utopia'.

It's got a keypad, should have decent battery life and it's the first non-smartphone I've seen in a long time that has a 5MP camera (I know MP aren't everything but I suspect in this case it's a fairly reasonable yardstick).
It will allow you to browse the web but it won't be a great experience, I'd imagine.

Oh, and it's only £30 + £10 top-up.

RE: Smartphone v. Keyphones

I went down this route; smartphones get in the way of communications. I tried them all.

The Nokia Asha 210 is a nice phone, but any internet use is slow and a bit crippled by the small screen. It's also 2G only and won't work on the Three network.

Blackberry Curve is still available from many sources and is 3G, excellent. But the small screen, etc etc. Battery life was excellent and it make a good 'phone.'

I ended up after testing a dozen phones with a 4.7" Windows phone: Nokia Lumia 635.

This has a good screen, a camera which produces excellent pics, the front screen can be edited to have only a couple of tiles on it (phone, text) and the battery will last me four days or more with WiFi and Sync/Mobile data turned off, ie; as a phone.

They're available everywhere as SIM-free for about £80. Argos had them as PAYG specials at £49.00, but the price has gone up now. Three price is £125 which is too much.

Lumia 635 is very unobtrusive as a phone, and can be as smart, or as dumb as you want. It also avoids the constant stream of updates which ate my credit on Android phones.

Touch screen though, but your thumbs soon get used to that. Free offline maps too, which are terrific.

'I find it more difficult to txt using the touch screen'

just got my first ever mobile a few day's ago and was finding texting on on-screen keyboard hard also , then tried little plastic pen-like stylus ,pound land 3 for £1 , looks just like cigarette sized straw with pen clip one end and soft sponge tip other end for using on-screen keyboard , makes a huge difference

Yes, there is a good reasonwhy professionals use the Note, that being its stylus.

Best bet is to find a BlueTooth ultra compact or folding keyboard that suits you. Phones and even tablets are simply not designed for typing on.
