EE Rook - a £40 Android 5.1 4GEE smartphone

EE quietly announced a new 4G (double speed) smartphone this morning, the EE Rook. It's not even on the website yet, or promoted in stores, despite being available to buy from stores right now.

It's £39 for existing PAYG customers who must have an active account, and also buy a top up for £10. New customers will pay £49 plus £10 for a top-up.

Made by ZTE, the phone has a 4-inch 480x800 pixel display, 5MP fixed focus camera (no flash, and only 720p video), Quad-core MediaTek SoC with 1GB RAM, 8GB internal storage, microSD card slot, and a 1500mAh battery.

It's not going to set the world alight, but it's still a pretty good device for the money. Especially as it has Android 5.1 out of the box and virtually no customisation to bog things down.

I got a device that I'll be reviewing in the coming days - and have already done a quick summary and unboxing here: http://jmcomms.com/2015/07/07/ee-roo...-for-under-40/

I've really got into looking at smartphones and tablets at the lower end of the market of late, as I think there are some exceptionally good products to be found - and phones like the Moto E, Moto G, Honor 4X actually punch well above their weight.

I do think that the Rook is perhaps starting to get to about as cheap a level as I could stand though!

It's starting to get press coverage now:

To push the boundaries of affordability, EE's equipped the Rook with a 4-inch, 800 x 480 display, a MediaTek 1GHz quad-core chip, 1GB of RAM, 8 gigs of internal storage (expandable), a 5-megapixel main camera, a 0.3MP front-facer, and a 1,500mAh battery. Oh, and a 4G radio, of course. The Rook is also sweetened with the latest version of Android 5.1 Lollipop, though we've no idea how well it runs on the handset's low-end components.

Why the hell has the Daily Mail attached a video testing EE's 4G service that was recorded years ago?! The guy in the video (a friend of mine) doesn't even work at Which? anymore!
