For Springsteen fans only...his best song is?
Is it possible to have one, and one only very favourite Springsteen song?
I don't think it is. No matter how hard I try, I could never choose just one song for my desert island. So maybe we need a top five, or a top ten. Hell we need a top 50, and there will still be some great stuff excluded. I am currently listening to "Land of hopes and dreams", which is one of my favourites. Others are Thunder Road The Rising She's the One Across the Border Brilliant Disguise Chimes of Freedom (best Dylan cover ever) The Promise Atlantic City Human Touch My Hometown Streets Of Philadelphia This Hard Land Youngstown Born to Run And I now realise that this is a daft and hopeless thread, we will never ever get any sense out of it. But I've typed it now so I might just as well post it and see what happens. If I should fall behind, wait for me.

`THE RIVER` I love that song, it must be 25 years since the album was released and I don`t think a better observation of `American ` life , as on this one song, has been done since. It has an almost Gospel/Hymn fel to it and it breaks your heart. The imagery of the young man and his girl going to the river then after all that happens..`The River is dry`
Maybe the best song ever? |

I would say The River, although I wouldn't say anywhere near the best song ever.
And I still love Sherry Darling, as it pointed me in the direction of BS in the first place. |

Top 5 would be...
5. The River 4. Jersey Girl (live) 3. Born To Run 2. Rosalita 1. Spirits In The Night I really wish he'd get back to being poetic, lyrically and musically. Those were the days. |

Difficult to whittle it down to five. Tomorrow my choice might be different but today it is:
1 Fire - As Bruce might say, 'This one's for all the ladies out there.' Forget Barry White, this is the best seduction song ever. 2 The River - As someone else said above, just heartbreaking. ![]() 3 Highway Patrolman - Equally heartbreaking. 'Man turns his back on his family, he just ain't no good.' 4 Born to Run - Full of youthful exuberance and excitement. 5 Dancing in the Dark - Joyful, fun, and uplifting.

I spent a lot of the Summer of 1985 in Majorca and I remember Born in the USA literally blasting from every bar and cafe in Magaluf, it was special.
![]() Dancing in the Dark and I'm on Fire, plus Glory Days, but I like nearly everything he's done. |
