A Kent only food?

Good evening everybody. Not long back from shopping, which included a couple of days with supply of our favourite treat, Gypsy Tarts.
They are an acquired taste, a bit moreish, and not ok if you are on a diet !
However, my question is, why do they seem to be a Kentish thing? I did try looking in London a few times but with no luck.
If anybody can give me the story of this culinary delight, I would be grateful
(Maybe one as a prize for the best answer!)

Always known about them in Kent, see them in local bakery's when I go home to visit my mum but never seen them in different parts of the country. Lots of Counties have a local delicacy or special made food that are un heard of outside their boarders I always just imagined it's hard to market and sell something people have never heard of, we tend to like what we're use to.

Thank you, St. Jammy should have guessed . That's what you get for having been round the block a couple of times!

Ooh, I used to love Gypsy Tart when we had it for pudding at school.

Oatcakes are very much a North Staffs / Potteries thing apart from Crewe market, which is in Cheshire.

Gypsy tart and half,an apple for school puddings.

A few years ago a few friends and I were talking about school dinners. It was only those of us from Kent who knew what gypsy tart was. Made from evaporated milk and brown sugar I think.

I stumbled upon them at an athletics meet in Hoo a few years ago. Couldn't buy one quick enough, bit into it and OMG!....so sickly!

Another memory of Gypsy Tart at school... it was always served with a spoonful of some sort of syrupy stuff. I have no idea what it was (and no memory of how it tasted). Does anyone else remember it being served like that?

We get them in Notts too. (They are like an oat pancake for those not in the Midlands)

Love gypsy tart!

Can only really get them in Kent, though a lot of Asda and Morrisons branches seem to stock them too.

I also remember it from school dinners (in Welling and Bexleyheath) - we used to get a spoonful of lemon juice/sauce with it.

Jo Brand talks about having gyspsy tart at school too, in her autobiography.
