Factory reset on a Moto G
tdenson
08-07-2015
I have a Moto G which is in a right state and keeps coming up with error messages such as "Unfortunately the process com.android.phone has stopped" and other critical system processes.
So I am trying to do a factory reset. As I understand it I hold volume down and power button, then release the power button. This brings up the appropriate menu including a factory reset, however when I use volume up to select the factory reset nothing happens (it just reboots to the same problem).

That's what I've done, but it never gets to step 4 (just reboots).

Then you maybe should try to reset it via recovery mode.

Here's a video showing how that's done:

Hope that helps.

Depends meant that the reset procedure is slightly different between Kitkat and Lollipop. Sometimes you just have to 'blip' (short press) the buttons to get it to select. Persevere.

Tried recovery mode and now it's totally bricked. Came up with the Moto splash screen and it's stuck on that no matter what I press now. Will probably have to flatten the battery to do anything else

This seems to be a common problem with 1st gen Moto G, it's name is 'boot loop'. There are many ways to fix it but you may have to get a replacement if all else fails.

Had a problem with my Moto G 4G G1 this week when the battery went flat and it would not restart after connecting a charger for 30 minutes it was just stuck at a screen with 0% battery icon on it.

To get into the boot menu for factory reset to take place you have to hold the power and volume down button for two minutes (at the least) before the boot up menu appears but it did work though it’s a momentous thing to have to do and two minutes can seem like a life time.

I'm still getting nowhere. Can anyone suggest any more drastic reset action I can take.

Is it still under warranty?

I guess so, but I've still got another broken Android phone sitting on my desk that I have been trying to get Amazon to refund me for (both the distributor and manufacturer refuse to do anything about it) for the last 6 months.

I shall probably take it into my local phone repair shop, can't face the hassle of yet another returns process.

To add further info to my previous - on the Fastboot reset menu it does say "Device is locked, connect USB Data Cable". This is probably quite relevant I have tried connecting a USB cable to my Mac but not tried a PC.

That's if you want to try to restore Kitkat. I think you're almost there, just select either the power key or Vol up to select factory reset. The timing is slightly strange, it may take several attempts.

I must have tried it at least a dozen times. Incidentally it usually gives me a message saying Android is upgrading.

Shame it doesn't have a user changeable battery, remove the power for five seconds. Torx T4 if you're feeling brave. If you've done the 120+ second reset, I don't know what else to suggest.

Just tried it for 150 seconds.
I think the problem is the upgrade. Each time I reset it it says "Android is upgrading" - where is it getting the upgrade file from, I suspect that is corrupt.

Does it say that on a black screen with a Android wiggling with it's ears or like this:

BTW: The last possible solution to rescue your phone would be to flash a new Android altogether. But as this requires an unlocked bootloader, it will void your warranty.

Yes, like your screenshot. I don't really care about my warranty, pretty sure it's a software problem.

How long have you waited for this screen to finish, as this can take quite some time?

Well it starts up and looks normal but before I can do anything it comes up with the "unfortunately xyz process has stopped" messages.

OK, then it really sounds like something with that update is wrong and you either get it to Motorola or some Repair Shop in you area or you try flash it yourself.

OK, then let's get cracking.

Everything you need you will get from this XDA-Thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2542219

We'll first try it without unlocking the bootloader, as the red disclaimer states that this should work without unlocking (which is kind of a hassle in its own).

You need the drivers (if your PC should be Mac or running Linux you don't need drivers) and the mfastboot.zip.

For the firmware there is sadly only the Filefacrory link (I didn't found any else which downloads faster).
Here you need to look out for XT1032 (that's the Global GSM Model) and "cid7" in the file name (as firmwares which match both of these are interchangeable, but others aren't).

The GB Retails are:
5.0.2: http://www.filefactory.com/file/37an...FC_1FF.xml.zip
4.4.4: http://www.filefactory.com/file/jd2e...FC_1FF.xml.zip
You should try flashing what was on your phone before it broke, as there might be some problems due to different partition sizes.

Now unzip the firmware and copy the contents of the mfastboot.zip in the unzipped firmware folder.

Install the driver and get your phone into the bootloder (power + vol down at startup) and connect it to your computer.
On Windows in Device Manager there should be "Motorola ADB Interface" entry.

Now go to the firmware folder hold down shift + right click and on "Open command window here" or just open a command window and navigate to the firmware folder.

To test if everything is working properly use this command:
[edit] mfastboot devices[/edit]
(On Mac always replace mfastboot with osx-fastboot and on Linux with linux-fastboot)

If its working correctly it returns something like this:
http://cdn.teamandroid.com/wp-conten...es-600x302.jpg

Then just go through every command in 3b) in the first post of the XDA-Thread.

Make sure everyone returns an [OKAY] at the end. Be a little bit patient here as some of these (especially the system ones) do take some time to process.
The last one restarts your phone.
