Tablets have been around for several years now and if you have to ask the question you clearly don't need one. Whether you want one or not is a different question.

Unless you need one in a working environment then owning one is a want not a need. Most people fall into the want category.

I don't need my iPhone, I could make and receive all my calls by landline; I don't need my iPad Air, I could sit at a desk and use my desktop for emails, surfing and productivity or sit in front of my TV to watch catchup TV, youtube etc; I don't need my 4G iPad Mini, I could stop doing all I do on my iPad Air whilst out travelling and wait till I got home; I don't need my MacMini or Macbook; I could use my old Dell PC (which now runs Linux instead of Windows).

But using all these gadgets just makes life more convenient for me as they all work seamlessly together. I can communicate, research, watch video or TV, listen to music or radio and many other things whenever I want wherever I want. No, it's not a cheap option but at the moment I can afford to do this, it adds to the variety of life and life is short so I enjoy it whilst I can.

Only you can truly answer whether its for you or not.

Spending thousands limiting ones choice via niche integration certainly suits some.

Others simply settle for a far wider multi platform integrations via the likes of Dropbox, Google Services etc
Of course stuff like Opera etc cannot integrate fully cross platform when it is banned to an extent.

1 watt costs about 10 p a month. 15mah would be less than a penny a month, and 15 mw near a quarter of a penny.

But that's freedom of choice not a limitation. I also choose not to use, Dropbox or any online storage facility nor do I use anything that requires me to have a Google or Microsoft account and as for that thing called social media...well don't get me started on that. But all that is what I choose to do, no doubt you choose what you want to use and do, it's called freedom and long may it continue.

I have a Nexus 7 tablet, but i do not use it that much. It is sometimes used for skype and that is about it. Waste of money to be honest for me.

I've several ranging from a cheapo Android, Hudl, Hudl2 and Surface Pro 3 and they are handy when away from home. I take the Pro 3 when I'm on Gran Canaria because in reality its an i7 computer but the Hudl2 stays in the car, its a great little gizzmo.

I don't really need any of them but...I like gadgets

Exactly the same as the rest of the spiel, not a limitation if you choose it for the limitation.

For me my laptop is an i5 6gb ram lenovo with an 11" screen. So it small and compact enough if I need to take it out of the house which I never need to, Its also small enough to perch on my arm chair in front of the telly where I'm at now. I do manual work and don't need a tablet for that.

The only possible reason I was thinking is my laptop is rather old now, if it dies an iPad would do all I need, I'd probably still need a laptop to put things on it or to reset it though, defeating the purpose once again.

For the same money as an iPad you could get a Surface 3 with a keyboard. Use it as a tablet without the keyboard when in your armchair, use the keyboard when you want to write a letter or something and its a full PC so you wouldn't need anything else. And it will get the free upgrade to Windows 10 if you want it.

How can it be a limiting choice when all those services are available on an ipad

If you're happy with what you've got you certainly don't need one. They are handy to have, as someone else said they are quicker to startup than a laptop. I'm with Jason W on this, I switch my laptop off, mostly at night but at times during the day too. I use my Samsung phone for browsing as much as my tablet (also Samsung) but the tablet has a bigger screen so at times preferable. If you don't read/watch youtube videos/listen to music etc on your phone and don't want to do these things whilst say travelling by train/plane then stick with what you've got. Even if you use your phone for these things obviously with the larger screen on a tablet it makes for a better experience.
