Overrated - Another one for Yesterday. It's a song I just really, really dislike, and I'm not really sure why.

im pleased my most hated beatles track is also others most hated/overrated... hey jude...

Also can't be doing with Hey Jude. I think my dislike of the song increased with the mass sing along on the phone advert a few years ago.

Don't know if they are underrated but Something and While My Guitar Gently Weeps spring to mind.

Overrated, all the songs Paul McCartney still inflicts (I mean performs.)
Don't like Get Back, for one.

Another underrated one, largely due to being on an album many don't bother with, is
Hey Bulldog. Great song that would merit a place ahead of several on the White Album.

Underrated - And Your Bird Can Sing, a great rock track that never really gets recognition.
Overrated: Hey Jude, soured on this a lot due to endless McCartney performances at big events.
Ob La Di Ob La Da, I know it's regarded as poor by many but the fact its rated at all is too much for me. Putrid.

Underrated - Girl, Norwegian Wood

Overrated. - Too many to mention but on balance I would say 75% of their output is excellent. With the passage of time prefer Lennon to McCartney.

I think this thread has turned into personal favourites and disliked Beatles songs. It's very difficult to quantify what's under or over-rated. I mean, someone upthread suggested that Day In The Life was under-rated. Surely that's well known as one of the band's finest songs??

However, my favourites (or at least ones I consider as possibly being underated);

And Your Bird Can Sing (what a guitar riff!)

Wonderwall is overrated

Overrated - anything that seems to put The Beatles in a certain category (usually 'bland balladeers') and distracts from their immensely diverse back catalogue. So something like Yesterday, Hey Jude, Long Winding Road....
I happen to think that the Beatles singles don't really do them much justice. So I sometimes find the Beatles 1 album overrated.

Underrated - way too many to mention.
I think I Am The Walrus deserves more attention, especially since it wasn't chosen as a single like it really should have been, also Happiness is a Warm Gun is a huge highlight on the White Album that all 4 Beatles enjoyed doing together (despite the album's reputation being all about disharmony and self-interest).
Also, Long Long Long tends to get ignored, especially in comparison to some of George's other songs, which are perhaps slightly overrated (or maybe not because they are great too).

The Beatles don't have an overrated song in my view and they also should not have any underrated songs as they wrote the best songs ever with the best lyrics ever I can't believe that anyone would think that The Long And Winding Road is bad, it has amazing lyrics and is beautiful, also to anyone who thinks that The Beatles are overrated full stop I feel sorry for you.

It's all relative. Even the biggest Beatles fan can see some songs are lauded while others
less so which may not seem quite right. There are also some songs that are not that great.

is overplayed and I understand some don't like it but for me it is magical.

I like most of George's songs better than the Lennon McCartney ones, including early ones like Don't Bother Me, I Me Mine, Think For Yourself, I Want to Tell You, Within You, Without You. Having said that, I wouldn't call any of the Beatles stuff overrated - they were a beacon of light in a sea of Elvis clones. We were blessed when they came along

The utter inability of some to accept that some have opinons that happen to differ from the majority is really quite embarrassing. Does somebody not liking The Beatles really outrage you that much?

"I've always thought" doesn't sound like someone stating their viewpoint as a fact at all. "Somebody who deserves to be ignored" and "some opinions have no value", on the other hand...

And if you're suggesting that The Beatles being overrated itself is factually incorrect (in the same breath as preaching about the difference between opinions and facts), well...

I think it's a real shame that, on a discussion board of all places (), somebody can't simply state a not-so-popular opinion without being insulted for it. This place gets more and more immature with each passing day.


Funny, I feel the same towards those who combust into flames at the very site of an opinion that goes against their own.

I wasn't going to bother responding to any of the vilification previous responses to my initial post apparently induced as nothing about them really bothered me. My thoughts were... Everyone's got their own opinion on everything, which is exactly how it should be. However, thank you for your eloquent and apt post about all this SBG which obviously relates to my participation in this thread.

For the record, I don't hate The Beatles music and (and I've just checked) and the fact I currently have 54 of their songs on my ipod is perhaps testament to that. That also actually might be 55 by tomorrow as I just heard an otherwise unknown to me track called 'Golden Slumbers' I think(?) on Alice Cooper's Planet Rock show, which I thought was really good, so I might just add that to my existing Beatles collection. However, do I still think they're an overrated group in the whole scheme of musical history? sorry folks, but yes I do! I could easily reel off a list of 20 groups/artists who I would personally rate higher and generally prefer the music of. I mean, really, it's all just a personal taste thing.

Just to help you identify it Golden Slumbers is part of a medley at the end of what was side 2 of the Abbey Road LP. Best not to seperate it from its eventual setting.

That side 2 medley on Abbey Road is one of The Beatles' greatest achievements in my opinion.
