Is this part of Murdoch's multi pronged attempt to kill off the BBC?

I know that Sky are doing a deal to offer free fibre optic broadband for a year* in their ongoing battle with BT but are they now also going to waive the £10 per month recording charge on their own freesat from Sky service because of the potential threat from BBC/ITV Freesat?

*Starting tomorrow – customers who sign-up to Sky Fibre will avoid the £10 per month fee the firm has previously charged for the fibre optic connection.

Interesting TU, I don't know how long it's been the case but I just pressed the Pause button by accident yesterday and it worked. Tested instant record and schedule record and that now works too.

That's interesting. Might have held on to my 2TB box if i'd known this was on the cards.

Although, to be fair, the Humax i bought instead does have the catchup stuff as well as DLNA and casting ability which I use a lot.

You can probably get away with a 500gb model if all your using the box for is FTA/FTV and possibly BT sports, especially if you are using a freesat box as well.

Thank you both for sharing your observations and please do keep reporting back to let us know if this continues. Thanks.

The interesting thing is whether this is a new and as yet unannounced policy change by Sky or, as with accidental decryption of some channels, if it's a temporary glitch that will be rectified.

I have a large stack of white viewing cards - kept from Sky boxes I've scrapped for the Hard drive - only a £ or two from Car-boots.......
I wonder if this is anything to do with Eutelsat 28 going to pastures new?

Last time I tested my collection of white cards none of them did seem to record.

My Sky subscription ceased 7/7/15. I just tried to record on my box and it doesn't work. I don't have it connected to the internet so updates in the past have been very slow.

Updates aren't done via the Internet (they are done via satellite), so it makes no difference whatsoever.

It s recording fine, with an ex subscription card that I paired to the box (DRX890R)
I'll try with some of the other old cards I have.
(Settings 01/new install) A bonus extra

This is a glitch not a change in policy. A fix should be pushed next week.

I can just imagine Sky saying, 'We do apologise to our FSFS customers for this oversight and can assure you we are doing our utmost to fix this problem asap'

It is almost certainly a glitch - otherwise it would cost Sky many millions of pounds in back duty. The Sky+ boxes were imported as receivers (on a lot lower duty than PVRs) as the Sky+ features are not functional without a subscription and this has been verified in court.

Enjoy it while it lasts.

Technically you could get round that (or a decent lawyer could) by arguing you need to buy a viewing card for it to work and the boxes are imported without those.

Anyway, hope people don't record too much and then find they can't watch any of it in a few days time!

Yes, it does indeed appear to be technical error and presumably Sky must now be aware of the issue from feedback from customers and call centre staff which will no doubt result in a fix at some date in the near future.

Which is presumably why you don't buy the viewing cards, they remain the property of Sky and are only rented to you.

So do people phone up and complain their box can now record?
