I bought a tin this morning

the power of DS.......

I've already got my meals sorted for the next 2/3 days but later in the week I'll get an onion, some garlic, chilli, some loose veg.......fry up the onion and veg with some curry powder, add sliced up spuds and a large tin of baked beans

Quick curry !

I found this!

http://www.pickyourown.org/canning_potatoes.htm

Thinking it's a combination of the liquid used, pre-cooking and pressure. Think I've noticed that more with tinned carrots from the sweet/salt taste, and some brands of tinned spuds don't have that special tinned flavor.

But assuming I grew new potatoes, and had a pressure cooker/canner & gubbins, this could be a useful way to make my own and preserve them..

I like to slice them and use them in a potato leek and bacon bake.

I had half the tin yesterday and they were nice !!!!

I posted this yesterday in the " What are you eating now " thread

I also tumbled the golden sizzled small boiled potatoes
[ Used half a 19p tin of *Savers* Potatoes ]
which had all been dried & cut / cleavered roughly into quarters - as they began to sizzle
in P/V Olive oil - on my hot !!!! cast iron circular griddle

[ Had this for brekkie yesterday on Wednesday ]
with a fried egg & tomato - a very mixed salad - cold red kidney beans in chilli sauce & a big spoon of coleslaw ] lastly I added some salad cream s&p

I have never heard about tinned potatoes. Are they marinated, cooked or how? I know about pre-sliced pomme frites style potatoes, but not tinned.

they're peeled and cooked.......

I just had a tin for lunch as ' baked bean and tinned potato ' curry

fried half an onion, 6 cloves of garlic and a large chilli in olive oil and curry powder......added a chopped tomato

simmered broccoli and tinned spuds for 5 minutes in another pan, drained and added to curry

finished dish off with a small tin of baked beans added to curry for a few minutes and a forkful of Patak's Chilli Pickle stirred through for 'oomph'......

lovely........

I like then now and then, and used to take them on holiday when going self catering!

But my god they splutter when you fry them. Really need to dry them off first.

Bought a tin of corned beef today so gonna make hash tonight with tinned pots.
Any tried and tested recipes?

Chop or mash spuds
Chop or mash beef
Chop up an onion (amount depending on preference)
Fry up onion and spuds in some butter to brown them
Add beef
Add pepper (and salt to taste, but the beef is usually pretty salty)
Add Worcester sauce if you like that flavor, or mustard, chilli.. go wild!
Cook to taste, ie crispy or not so crispy.

Variations I tend to do are with how mashed up or lumpy the spuds and beef are, and then how crisp I let it go. Partly because I often eat it as a sandwich filling in some nice fresh bread

Probably add salt, sugar and various chemicals. They're not exactly fresh vegetables or the healthy option

Couldn't imagine Rick Stein or Gordon Ramsey using tinned potatoes

I certainly don't think the top restaurants would use them either.

I like my corned beef hash lumpy so no mashing !

It's easy to make........just simmer your spuds in a little water. I'd cut the tinned ones into quarters. I'd normally add a chopped up onion and a diced carrot and an Oxo cube or some powdered stock

Add the corned beef in chunks........it'll break down into a thick meaty gravy

I think it's best to start with a little water in the pan just enough to cover the veg before you add the corned beef........then add little bits of extra water as needed

You want it to end up thick not watery !

For me hash is a recipe that has no set recipe. It's like bubble & squeak. Raid the fridge or leftovers.

Because of this thread while I was out with a friend today
We were stood near the tinned potatoes and asked her if she ever has them in her cupboard
she said she does !!!!!
And went on to say she likes to mash them - then dices some onion and mixes them together - with s&p
then she ** Dry fries ** them ....... till golden and crispy
- then she fries a fried egg - to put on top

She also uses them when she makes a corned beef hash

I've never made corned beef hash with tinned potatoes but the idea is beginning to appear attractive

Normally I only buy new potatoes when I buy them fresh and for everything I leave the skin on.........except for CBH where I think they absolutely have to be peeled.......and peeling lots of new potatoes is a right chore

So I think I might try CBH with tinned just to save the peeling........

I knew you'd do it at some point 🙌

I did my corned beef hash yesterday. I dried the tinned pots, cubed the beef and fried it all together with loads of Worcester sauce and sliced mushrooms till crispy.
Best I've ever made.

And so we claim another soul for the tinned spud god!

Yesterday I was shopping for gram flour and other bits. Saw tinned spinach sitting near tinned spuds and thought 'instant sag aloo!'.

My mum sometimes used to buy these. Weird things, they don't taste or even have the same texture as potatoes. I'm not quite sure why anyone would need them when real potatoes last so long and are so cheap.

Good job I wasn't interested in your replies then wasn't it.
When you have anything useful to add then by all means do. Until then try and think up something else. Discuss!
