Do you think Pauline Fowler would fit in the current Eastenders?

Pauline and Pat are the type of characters you don't appreciate til they're gone. They always made other characters better as they were huge touchstones of history which enabled other characters to bounce off them. Dot is the only other one like that IMO with Sharon/Ian potentially able to step up to that if the writers remember their history.

Never liked Dot much. They over did the lonely old woman and the old woman who got robbed too often when I used to watch as a kid.

I have often thought how Pauline would fit in with today's show.

I think for a time she would have been made redundant with the departure of Martin, Sonia and Rebecca. She would have remained at number 43, either alone or with Ian and Jane and the twins. In this regard she would have been kept alive with plenty of on screen family. I don't think she would or should have had another relationship after Joe Macer. Maybe a nice friendship, ala Dot and Jim but without marriage.

She would have been a huge part of the Who Killed Lucy storyline, but funnily enough I think Pat was missed more, given she always had more to do with Ian's kids than Pauline did.

I think Pat is missed sorely today.

The hatchet job done on Pauline's character I think goes some way to Walford moving on from her, whereas Pat was such a legend even up until the end.

Would they have been able to reverse Pauline's descent into complete misery? Probably not entirely, as this had become a big part of her character.

I would love to have seen her react to Stacey and Martin, Sonia's getting with Tina, the seldom seen Rebecca.

As I said above, the "who killed Lucy" story probably would NOT of happened if Wendy was still in the show. She would've got the main story as she would've been the longest serving character even though Adam was in the show from the beginning too. It probably would've been a story based on Pauline and Ian...

Not to speak ill of the dead but I was working in Edgware Road in 1999 and Wendy Richard often came into the place I worked in and she was pretty soured faced and miserable.

Was that because you always asked her about Ann Mitchell Vas?

That was needless.
