The funniest bit was the Woman (perhaps in her late 60's) in the queue after me was sort of looking aghast with her mouth open at me and the checkout girl like we were beings from another planet talking some strange tongue.
I didn't actually make eye contact (peripheral vision was all that was required) but you could tell she couldn't quite believe I'd just paid with my phone!!
Hahahahahahahaha

You have buses? From September we will have less unless our council get off their backside and sort things out, First bus is pulling out, not that it will be a great loss to be honest, talk is that stagecoach is going to take their place.
They are worse than first if that is possible.
Are you ever happy Noise747?

But your rent or mortgage is probably a hell of a lot less than it would be in London. Workers should get some sort of subsidy on their travel costs. My point, as I stated in my initial post is that tube fares shouldn't be that much higher than bus fares and in line with other major cities. Especially if the distance is the same or a lot shorter.
It's probably just as unaffordable when taking our pathetically low wages into account.

Another example would be the the south east, which has similar property price issues, high wages, high taxes, yet they don't get anything quite like what London has in terms of transport

The wages are not that great in London for the ordinary worker either. When you have to pay £2,000 a month rent for a 2 bedroom flat or £325 a week for a 1 bedroom flat which is not even in central London but zone 3 in south London then minimum wage doesn't quite help paying so much for public transport.

I moved out of London to enjoy a better quality of life. Nobody is forced to pay ridiculous rents. You can move only 10-20 miles out and get a LOT more for your money, and even see things like grass and trees!

You paint a picture like everyone in London is suffering and should be cut some slack. You get London weighting (well, not everyone - but take that up with your union!!) and have choices just like everyone else.

I totally agree that house prices are ridiculous, but I quit moaning and moved and feel all the better for it. I can now get from home to King's Cross in half an hour, so don't feel like I'm any further out than when I lived in north London and it could take an hour to get into central London.

I used Apple Pay in two (relatively) deserted Tube Stations today. Checking in went OK,
but checking out, Oh dear !!! First gate just wouldn't play ball, I went to another, and it was a struggle, but eventually phone and gate acknowledged each other. The TFL bloke kept shouting at me to remove my credit card from my phone's case, I couldn't be bothered to explain, but I won't be using it again (or at least certainly not if there's anyone behind me).

I suppose that's a bit more stressful than the checkout Woman in Morrisons going "CARD?" as I held the iPhone over the terminal.
Behind me there was only one person and they looked like they could hardly manage cash let alone a card.
I had to sternly go "NO, this will work", she pressed the button (reluctantly it seemed) and it worked. Much to her disappointment.
Bloody Luddites...

I tried to pay with Apple Pay today for the first time. Firstly in Marks And Spencer. I held the card to the reader and pressed the round button on my phone but nothing happened. I asked the cashier who had to consult a colleague who reckoned it is only available in larger London stores. Then I tried at a self service checkout in WH Smiths and it worked. I wasn't expecting it to work in there but it did. Then on to KFC. The girl looked at me like I was crazy when I produced my phone. "you can pay with a phone can you?" she asked and then she said "Isn't that incredibly dangerous?" EH. Dangerous?? I said its quite secure if thats what she meant. Anyway it wouldn't work and the staff in there obviously had no clue about it.

You don't press the home button. You just place your finger on it. Maybe that's why nothing happened. Plus maybe the cashier at M&S didn't choose the contactless option on the reader. Not sure if M&S are accepting transactions over £20. Was your transaction over £20? Maybe that's another reason why it didn't work.

Yeah I accidentally pressed it the other day and then looked a right muppet as I manually had to reload Passbook!!! Hahahaha
Probably would have been quicker to put the phone to sleep and start again!
In situations where the staff have not a clue what is going on, the best thing to do is just say something like "It's Apple Pay, contactless!. Then they press the correct button on the till and Bingo! you've paid!

It was under £20. I think I did just place my finger on the home button at first then pressed it when nothing happened. I didn't know a cashier has to choose a contactless option. Mind you when I paid in wh smiths no cashier had to do anything. I just put my phone near the reader and suddenly the Touch ID symbol appeared. So I put my finger on the home button and it bleeped and took the payment. This was at a self service till. No one had to do anything to the reader at all.

Bring humans into the equation and then you have problems.

Some retailers including M&S and McDonald's require manual selection of contactless, partly to avoid debiting the wrong card if someone has their wallet or purse close by, and also to avoid the somewhat unlikely, but possible, scenario of someone capturing details.

Ridiculous gimmick that will fail miserably .

What I've noticed is the smug look on people when they whip their phone out and remind everyone it's Apple .

The terminals in McDonald's now promote Apple Pay and I asked if a lot of people have used it and got told 'a few'.

It needs people to keep using it over a plastic card, after the novelty wears off. What I think might happen is people continue using a card for small payments and travel, but will embrace it for large purchases.

To make you even more jealous I usually whip out my Apple Watch and place my wrist above my head just to show everyone I am using my Apple Watch, stand there doing some smell the fart acting and then slowly bring my arm down in front of the reader making sure everyone sees me.

I'm a field engineer and spend my life in drive throughs etc, and always make small purchases. I've always used contactless cards, and avoid carrying cash because of it. I think people who use contactless regularly will embrace it because it's more secure.

As a regular contactless user, I prefer to use apple pay instead of contactless due to the security.

Also compared to getting my phone out of my pocket, paying and putting it back (which I estimate to be around 5 seconds), getting my wallet out, opening it, finding the correct card etc... then finding you have to kind of rub the card over the terminal to get it to actually register, is a real faff now!!

My business is taking Apple Pay payments and we have no limit on the amount we can take. It all depends on the merchant - some will impose a limit and some won't.

I've just updated to iOS 9 beta and can confirm that you can now just double click on the home button when the phone is in sleep mode and Apple Pay will just open automatically and ask you to hold your phone near the reader to pay. Much quicker for using on the Tube especially. The Passbook is now called Wallet.

Well yeah, those changes happened 7 weeks ago with developer beta 1.

So can I confirm, you double press but then keep your finger on the reader for authentication, then the app appears ready to pay?
