Rather than it being a case that Joel doesn't give much away is that that like any would be politician you know not to say too much for fear of what you say being taken out of context and used against you later on down the line. For example Cristian and his sex tape admission.
Also most of the housemates aren't too interested in each other. Anyone that appears on BB are innate show offs. Otherwise why would anybody put themselves up for intense scrutiny by a few million viewers. This includes "shy gentle Nick" who I quite like. So most housemates are in general are all about their own ego and are constantly assessing how they are being perceived. Their interest in each other is self serving and after a few weeks outside of the house they will have reverted back to type.
But back to Joel. One of the more common criticisms of him is that gives off an air of superiority. Could it be that he comes across as being superior in the eyes of people that for one reason or another are feeling inferior, oppressed or beaten down by others around them or life in general? And that Joel's confidence, assertiveness and particular way of conversing justifies their loathing of him.
I am not saying that everyone should like Joel and I don't mean to disparage anyone's feelings or thoughts about him. I just find it interesting that besides Marc (who I liked) Joel is the housemate who has such divided opinions on the forum.

I thought the part you highlighted was interesting and at least worthy of some discussion, rather than just a glib remark. I think confident people can over shadow others which can lead to resentment and frustration. It's something to consider.

I think it's rather presumptuous and a pretty silly way to reason something out. We're talking about audience members forming opinions about people they've watched on a TV show.
Does that mean the people who find Danny aggressive must be meek in real life, or feel oppressed by aggressive people?
Do people find Nick sly because they've been wronged by sneaky people?

I think both I and the other poster (Squidgems), are basically saying the same things. Just in different ways. That less confident people may resent Joel because of his assertiveness. Not saying it's a cold, hard fact. Just an interesting possibility worthy of discussion. Anyways if you don't feel that way, then that's perfectly ok.

Actually I wasn't inferring that your lives are rubbish. What I believe is along the lines of what Eve Eĺle said. That is a lot of people's views or feelings about someone can be based on unconscious or conscious stereotyping or based on past interactions with similar people or events that have happened in your life. If some of those experiences are not so good ones does that mean that your current existence has no value? Of course not!

I don't think you need to have personal experience of being wronged by a sly person to consider being sly a generally negative character trait. Who genuinely thinks slyness is an admirable quality? Apart from maybe other sly people?

Regarding the stereotyping, IMO, many folk who have a negative opinion of Joel seem to be basing their feelings on the fact he is "Tory" - and therefore have declared 'open season' on him.

You may be right. But similarly, many people seem to be supporting Joel precisely because of his political leanings so it's a fairly redundant point.
