Well, people have been complaining that we should have got an episode all about Deirdre and that's basically what we got: The entire episode is split between the Barlows at home and the senior characters in the Rovers, with her being the topic of conversation for the majority of the time. The Audrey/Bev scene felt apt and was a nice touch with the show's past, it was only the Liz/Dan stuff that intruded and that only took up about a couple of minutes of screen time. She wasn't perfect and neither was anyone else: That's probably how we'll all be remembered. Lots of lovely little touches (I love the looks that pass between Emily and Rita when alluding to Ken's old flames). Bullseye.
Tonight was the first really excellent episode in the last 2 weeks.

The writing was brilliant

I thought the Ken/Tracy/Peter bits were excellent, typical family at a funeral with some home truths all round, The the rovers had People sharing fond memories they had of Deirdre Well written
What kind of family has dirty linen and 'home truths' like that to dish out at any time, let alone at a funeral?

I stayed off the forum this evening as I was hoping tonight's episode would be a good one.

I am so glad that the writer's got it spot on this evening.

What a great episode and the end was perfect with the light going out on Deirdre.

Excellent stuff. It was classic Corrie and without a doubt the strongest episode we've had this year.

Kate Ford is a much better actress when doing scenes like that. She doesn't do the pantomime villain being cheesy and smarmy very well I think

I think tonight's episode was the first really excellent one in the last year! It was everything last week and the funeral episode should have been but wasn't. That actually felt like a proper tribute episode, good writing, virtually everything about Deirdre, and with all the subtle, but vital little touches needed to really make the scenes. Loved Audrey and Bev, some actual reference to some actual Corrie history, something which makes it more 'real' a continuing show rather than a week by week mini drama like a weekday afternoon short story. And it can't be a coincidence that all the actors involved were the long serving older cast, not the younger ones, which really bought home that the younger characters and newbies mean nothing compared to the established cast. They simply don't have the same appeal and presence, either the writers or the actors just haven't been able to bring them to life enough for viewers to connect with. Not a one can I imagine having everybody in the pub reminiscing over them like that and not a one would leave so much as a dent in the street if they weren't there let alone a hole like Deirdre will.

Has anyone asked how Shelley is
Nope, and surely she would have come with Bev to break the news. Don't they run a pub together in the Peak District?

It just made Bev's comment about Deirdre telling her about the fire and how Dev must have coped seemed all the more bizarre. Have they forgotten Shelley and Sunita were best friends? I was surprised Shelley didn't go to her funeral given how close they once were, plus I think she got on with Bev too. Bev acted as if Deirdre had just mentioned the fire in casual gossip.

A much better episode and better script. The Barlow scenes were much better. I liked the end scene with ken.

It would have been so much worse with Sarah and/or Sean behind the bar, and Andrea propping it up.

When Emily was going through the list of Ken's old flames "from exotic dancers to bargees" Rita rolled her eyes. I think Emily was getting a dig in there because Rita was once an old flame of Ken's, in fact that's how she was introduced to the Street. Not certain she was an exotic dancer but she was certainly a night club singer.

It would seem a weakness of writing and direction. I really hope they use this to change and develop Tracy. She has such a legacy and future in the show that if written well she could be worthy of carrying the Barlow torch...

She was indeed an exotic dancer. I love the little references like that which are not over explained but reward longtime viewers.

Continuity that has been so lacking was there in spades tonight. The Street cannot survive by living in the past, but it should always get continuity right... the Kevin/Jenny nonsense was inexcusable...

They wouldn't have been appropriate, but nothing wrong with Sean or Sarah as characters

Firstly to say I have just watched the episode & fully endorse what everyone else is saying: Great writing, superb acting, great continuity for once, a brilliant tribute to Anne and Deirdre!!

On the subject of the younger cast I will say this!! The ones who have been around since the early 00's are, by and large close friends in real life as are the current older cast!! They have been around 10 to 15 years, the current older cast 40 to 50!! Let's judge fairly & wait till they have had another 30 years storylines behind them before we see whether or not episodes like this will ever be written about them!! Let's face it had Deirdre died at the age say Fiz or Maria is now do you really believe it would have had the same impact?? No me neither!! You need a lot of time & a lot of character developments to become a much loved icon like Deirdre was!!

I am not saying whether these characters will ever get there, but with good writing & storylines that suit their characters I think there is every chance they will!!

In 40 years time, in my 92nd year i hope to, be typing what a brilliant episode for the funeral of 'n' with all their friends around them reminiscing about great storylines they've had "and you could tell those tears were real couldn't you!"

Give the youngsters a chance!! Deirdre took years to become an icon & it was through great character development more than anything!! Annie Kirkbride wasn't the world's most accomplished actress but she gradually built a character who was warm, human & everyone could relate to!! That comes with time, that's all I'm saying!!

The row at the family table between Tracy, Ken and Peter was realistic I thought. The only topic up for conversation at a time like this would be Deirdre and it seemed true to life that things could get heated.

It was a wonderful character-led episode and just the sort of thing that was needed with the Barlows.

My only niggle with the Barlow scenes was the lack of a Charlie mention when Tracy was being analysed. There's just no way it wouldn't come up. Anyone who is unaware of the character's history would be forgiven for thinking that she has just been a bit selfish over the years. I did like Tracy turning the tables on Ken and Peter by reminding them that she wasn't the only one to have let Deirdre down. It needed to be said.

I loved all the references to the past throughout the episode, a treat since Corrie rarely seems to acknowledge its rich history anymore. It just goes to show when they make the effort. I wouldn't want contrived mentions of the past here, there and everywhere but where references are relevant, as in last night's episode, they can really add depth to the show. One of my favourite things about this week is that the writer remembered Bev and Audrey's falling out over Fred.

I actually started to watch this as it aired last night and switched off after five minutes when Ken blamed Tracy for Deirdre's aneurysm. I seldom watch a full week due to the quality of it now but did want to see all of the Deirdre episodes. I would've probably come back to it but all the rave reviews made me do so quicker, and I'm glad about that as it turned out to be really rather good.
