Joel's mum reminds me of Steven Goode's mum from last year... doubt she would allow any of Joel's friends to be on BBOTS in place of herself...
I always think the other way around, why are friends and not family there for some of them? Not that it matter, family sometimes can't get away, work, it costs a lot to travel (especially if they are going to the final tomorrow), all sorts of reasons.
For Joel, Wales is a long way and it is a week night (work night for many).

His mother does seem extremely pushy, he has a sister who would have fitted into the F&F age range much better.
Actually Cardiff is only three hours down the M4, so very possible his friends couldn't make it because they have jobs as others have said.
