Realistically he can't get away with his crimes for years on end

In real life criminals often get away with crimes for years on end. Sometimes they never get found out at all.

As a producer, Kate Oates isn't all that strong on narratives with genuine integrity, preferring the more sensationalist route of high drama.
Robert has always been written with a get-out-of-jail-free scenario about him, and then gets allowed to roll on to his next scheme.
He could probably be written like this to infinitum if the shows cares to do so - and it wouldn't surprise me if this is how it goes with him.

The character is more than capable of being redeemed, he's got nothing on Tracy Barlow and she's already halfway there (IMO).

He's a great character played by a very capable actor, it will be a travesty if he leaves.

If it is beyond their control and the actor has decided to leave, then he should be written out. Not killed off. The Sugdens ARE Emmerdale, they were its founding family. Turning one into a total psycho and then killing him all for 12 months of sensationalism would be utterly ridiculous.”

I feel the same, ED have struck gold with Ryan Hawley, he is fantastic as Robert. I hope Robert loses everything and rebuilds his life, redeeming himself along the way.

I see him more as a new Charity. I can see him rebuilding, but not redeeming. "Redeemed" Rob just wouldn't be Rob. And not much fun to watch either.

It's a shame. It wasn't always this way. Her first year and a half was so strong. Then, last summer, it all changed. I wonder what happened.

BIB: Do you think they would pair them up? Not as a couple but partners in scheming?

I would like to see what Cain would think of that!

Lord Rob's minion wouldn't be too happy either

Good God. The idea of Charity and Robert teaming up ... scary. *shudder*

Maybe if they could both get something out of it, they might collaborate temporarily. But they're both too rampantly selfish to work well together. Which is a good job, because it would be mayhem.

As happens with all producers they see the previous producer's work through to the end - it's already written and in place. More or less just needs a bit of script writing and filming.
Then they're on their own.
Stuart Blackburn carried on Gavin Blyth's ideas and stories, then she had to carry his on.

I wish I had a quid for every time I've seen discussion on here of who did what on a producer hand-over.

I associate KO's work with the things that came slightly later - the extended Barton family, putting Declan with Charity after the fire, rewriting Robbie's character after Megan got hurt, bringing back Donna for Ross, bringing in Rakesh for Priya, and bringing in the Whites/Robert Sugden. I think that was all KO's work, no one else's.

Like Sam's said, story-wise it was all going absolutely hunkey-dorey until about a year ago when suddenly Robbie got killed off, and Aaron came in, and things went a bit haywire. I have no idea why - sometimes it's advertisers baying for more sensation to bring in an audience spike.

We've still had some good stuff (Alicia, Laurel), but it all feels a bit clunkily rammed together at times. And while I'm looking forward to the explosion, I'm starting to wonder if there's going to be anything of Emmerdale actually left ...

I'm just repeating what Stuart Blackburn said when he took over at first.

I do not believe for one second that Stuart Blackburn would not have it planned out almost 2 years in advance though. Kate Oates work was almost immediately apparent, fleshing out stories and making them move at a faster pace than SB was ever capable of.

Exactly, I associate her work coming shortly after the siege in the lead up to Christmas.

Aaron's return and the introduction of the White's, the new history for the extended Barton's leading up to Emma's introduction was where everything got a bit messed up.

Thank goodness for Alicia and Laurel's stories to be quite honest, without them this year would have been pretty diabolical.

Robert is irredeemable by now, but given the way Cameron dragged on and on and on I wouldn't be surprised if he was still there this time next year. Next week sounds like it's coming to a head but then the spoilers for the following week make it sound like nothing's really happened.
