Our kitten was spayed last week and yesterday we noticed quite a large lump on her stomach.

She was due to go to the vets tomorrow to have her stitches removed but I brought the appointment forward to this afternoon.

Just got back and they think she has a hernia following the spay operation, they've taken her to the main branch of the vet (the vet who did the operation is working at a different branch today) and were waiting to hear if she needs another operation.

Has anyone any experience of hernias in cats?

Were a bit worried about her although the vet has said its generally perfectly treatable.

Also, if it has been caused by the spay operation, will I be liable for further costs or will it be post-op care?

If you've caught it early, it's a pretty straightforward repair. It's not the sort of repair to put off, however. Like with people, there can be serious complications.

She was at the vets last Saturday for her first post-op check and it wasn't there then.

She's had plenty of cuddles every day since and nobody noticed it, I'm quite confident yesterday was when it appeared.

Just heard back from the vets. Panic over.

Its not a hernia after all, its edema/oedema - fluid retention in other words.

They've drawn some of the fluid off and want to see her again next week.

Basically they think she's been too active since her spay and that's what's caused it.

That's good news! A few days rest should see her sorted.

Yes, unfortunately rest seems to be the last thing on madames mind at the moment 😖
