I sometimes have the audio description on when I watch Corrie - it makes it easier to follow the show and the episode thread A female speaker has twice referred to Craig's artwork in the ginnel as 'Maddie's muriel' (one of her male colleagues calls it a mural). Is this some sort of homage to Hilda Ogden, or a joke? Or maybe she thinks muriel is the right word.

I must say, if ever I have to mention one, which doesn't happen that often admittedly, I always call it a muriel too, I've even been corrected by someone who couldn't have known about Hilda Does anyone else now say muriel instead of mural? It would be a brilliant tribute to a truly iconic character if it ended up in a dictionary because it's used so often.

I've never heard anyone in real life genuinely refer to it as a 'muriel'. Before Hilda in Corrie however, at some point in 1974, Amos Brearly in Emmerdale Farm was talking about getting a "muriel" at The Woolpack, so maybe it actually is a common mistake for some people.

The only reason I know it is Mural is because I watch Bing with my daughter. They paint a Mural in one of the episodes
