I have a 4th generation 20gb i-pod and this is backward compatible so I assume the i-pod mini will be. Don't think you will have any problems.

Yep, every USB2 device is USB1 backward compatible. Only thing is though, it'll be hugely slower than if you were to use USB2.

USB1 = 12 mb/s
USB2 = 480 mb/s

brother has a 40gb ipod and he uses usb1 so yes backwards compatible, but takes bout 5 secs per song to be downloaded to the ipod.

his crashed the other week and had to format it and re load all the songs took hours as had over 2000 songs

Has your computer for Firewire? It's much, much faster than USB1 on my iBook - an older one, so no USB2!

Apple just lists it as USB2 to make things easier for them.

Speed is only an issue on the first sync (where all songs must be copied). If it is just a few songs, then USB 1.1 can cope.

Add in usb2 cards are very cheap these day..even pcmcia ones for laptops are reasonable... I am sure you can survive with USB 1.1 however
