So, in the flat we were just discussing cheese and jam sandwiches.

My flatmates found the idea unusual, and disgusting, but these were a staple of my childhood.

I'm insisting that it's not an unusual combination, and I'm sure that this wasn't something specific to my own household.

Anyone else had/like them?

Me. Not British, so I don't know if that helps your argument or not.

Cream cheese with any flavour, and cheddar with strawberry were my favourites.

I am British, and those were also my favourites.

Isn't it nice when people find unexpected common ground?

My thoughts are that it isn't that unexpected.

But yes, it is nice.

Cheese and jam?....No thanks.

Dry toast with thinly sliced cheese and a dollop of marmalade is divine though.

Please try it.

We had crumbly lancashire cheese with damson jam on barmcakes every saturday teatime when I was younger and I have just started getting back into them! Delicious!

Jam is not too much different from chutney so no reason why it wouldn't work.

Fruits have different flavours which can complement savoury ingredients.

You're thinking of Ken Dodd's Diddy Men who work down the Jam Butty mines.

Cheese and honey is bloody lovely as well. On the cheese and jam front I always liked cheddar and raspberry jam sandwiches best.

I've not experimented much with cheese 'n jam, but I am very partial to cheese with orange marmalade.

Sweet and savoury is a double act in many dishes but I don't particularly like it. My father used to love a lancashire cheese and blackcurrant jam combo but I could not bring myself to try it.
However, I do like a bit of mature cheddar on a toasted fruit teacake so that's similar!

It depends. Some cheeses go well with certain sweet condiments, eg Camembert or Brie with cranberry or redcurrant jelly. But not every cheese will taste good with every kind of jam. Experimentation is called for!

As in cheese and jam on the same sandwich?! Never heard of that one before and don't think I'll be rushing to try it either.
