I very rarely buy these and never know which to go for. Which brand/shape make the crispiest chips (not too fat or too thin!)?

I've tried many different brands/own label ones.

Imho M&S crinkle cut ones are the best by a long way.

You should give them a try.

Haha, I came into suggest something bland like McCains but you're right, I remember having the M&S ones and thinking they were great.

M&S are certainly good as are Asda Home Fries.

One piece of advice I got here on DS a few years ago is to cook oven chips about 5 minutes longer than the maximum recommenced on the packing. I do this and they do taste better. Maybe not quite as long for these thin fries.

I agree about cooking them 5 minutes longer. I use McCain Home Fries or Crinkle Cut. One thing that definitely improves them is to toss them in olive oil, salt & black pepper just before they go in the oven.

Another vote for mccain home fries. I find two minutes in the microwave shortens the oven time too

I use a deep fryer.

ALDI's straight cut chips are my choice at the moment. (For me, as the OP said, not too thin and not too fat).
If not then ASDA smartprice fry chips.

Both are the kind you'd find in your standard takeaway. (At least round here they are).

Because of high cholesterol I don't have chips very often........in fact only around Christmas as my treat......

But I like the thin ones, French Fries, style.......either Sainsbury own brand or McCains

and I cook them in the chip pan

I liked triple cooked chips (M&S), even better if you sprinkle them with salt before cooking and halfway through

Oven chips are truly the work of the devil!

If you are going to have chips then do the decent thing and make them fresh from real potatoes. There is simply no substitute for the real thing.

I find McCains home fries (and some others such as the home crinkle cut chips) to be massively superior to all other brands.

No I'd say a good ten minutes - of expensive oven time!

Aldi's Homestyle Fries are good

McCains Gorgeous chips are lovely, cooked in beef dripping. Cost over £3 for a small bag (500g) though so only have them for a bit of a treat!

I don't get on with the normal McCain oven chips, they never seem to cook in the recommended time and if they are left in for longer they just turn into cardboard

Tesco Finest are very good, cheaper than McCains too

I'm generally one of those people that makes most things from scratch but I can't be arsed making chips. Oven chips are actually pretty decent. I generally just go with mc can
