Nina Simone
So I've always known who Nina Simone was but it wasn't till the other week I started listening to her music because I love Lana Del Rays cover of 'The Other Women'.
I started listening to her on Spotify & instantly fell in love. Anyone else a fan? |

Yes she was a wonderful singer, songwriter and pianist. 'The High Priestess of Soul, Jazz and Blues' . I have always adored 'feeling great', 'my baby just cares for me', ;' i love you porgy', 'aint got no life', ' don't let me be misunderstood' and 'i put a spell on you'.
Strange enough, I watched the netflix documentary last night. She was such a troubled soul. Made me understand the lyrics to songs a little more. |

She was a bubbling caldron of what it is to be a human and it all came pouring out into her music. Violent, passionate , campaigner with vulnerability all rolled into one.
Yes I am a fan and 'I'm Feeling Good'

I'm sure most people now recognise Ain't Got No, I Got Life from those TV commercials a few years back.
However, I adore My Baby Just Cares For Me. The piano melody in the song is simplicity at its finest. |

Sinnerman - one of my favourite songs. Nina was not only a fabulous and singer with a distinctive voice but also a great pianist.

There was an interesting documentary on BBC4 tonight where singer Laura Mvula went to the US to find out the history behind some of Nina's greatest songs.

Listen to Sinnerman. One of the greatest songs ever. Ten minutes of sheer magnificence.

I'm not a huge 'Greatest Hits' fan, but this is probably in my Top 20 most played albums of all time.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...s=music&sr=1-3 Her cover of The Bee Gees 'To Love Somebody' is sublime IMO. |

Yes I think Nina Simone is one of the greats of modern music. She initially wanted to become a classical artist but was rejected at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. So she then produced early Jazz hits such as I Love You Porgy. Simone then became more soulful with Don't Let Be Be Misunderstood. Then came the classic reworking of Screaming Jay Hawkins; I Put A Spell On You.
Throughout her career Simone remained an individual stylist who brought to every song an intelligence to every song she performed. Very few artists could match this. |

I'm currently obsessed with Love me or leave me. They really don't make music this good anymore. |
