Right, firstly I know there is an exception to this rule with Little Mix doing pretty well in the charts.

But yeah almost every other girl band or duo have one hit and then disappear, they get dropped and then disappear. Recent casualties include:

G.R.L
Neon Jungle
Stooshe
Mini Viva
And loads more

It seems weird in a world where boy bands are in abundance and seem to survive together that girl bands just don't have the same fate.

The saturdays are basically done, fifth harmony is too early to tell and little mix are the only ones going strong. I just don't understand, any ideas?

It is odd. Especially when music by girl bands is usually far superior.
It mainly comes down to the hormonal teens fueling boy group fandoms. They support the boy band in any way they can because they think they're attractive.

I thought girl bands disappeared, as the members basically changed their lifestyle/private lives?

Let's face it, if none of the Spice Girls had got married/had babies etc, would they still be going?

That's basically what happened to the Spices & Atomic Kitten & presumbly what will happen to The Saturdays & Little Mix eventually.

a few reasons. one reason is because boybands who are good looking automatically get girls buying records regardless if their musics crap. Lets face it, certainly before Zayn left, 1D could have released an album of fart noises and it would still get to no1. Speaking as a male, I don't think boys are that shallow [sorry girls lol]. I think for a guy to buy a girlband's music, they'd have to actually like it

Another reason is its very hard for a glamorous girlband to get girl fans because of jealousy. Little Mix are good looking girls but they aren't overly attractive or stick thin. They look like every other girl that other girls can relate to and don't feel threatened by them. Same with the Spice Girls. They wore normal clothes that they themselves made and empowered girls to stick up for themselves and all that girl power stuff.

Guys take music more seriously. They would actually have to like the music of a boy band or girl band to buy it

I don't think they would have anyway to be honest. Geri leaving affected them big time as they always said 'friendship never ends' and then suddenly geri announced she was leaving so it was seen as a contradiction

Yeah all of those bar girls aloud and the saturdays haven't been relevant for years

When girls aloud came back they didn't set the world on fire and the saturdays last single barely made the top 40 so they're hardly doing well....

I think it goes in cycles. Throughout the 1990s, you had boybands like Take That, Boyzone and internationally NSYNC and Backstreet Boys but only the Spice Girls really made it for the girls.

But then you look at the 00s, the boys took a backseat with only Blue and Westlife around from 00-08 (and Blue split in 05 with Westlife being out of the boyband market by 05). At the same time, Sugababes and Girls Aloud found success, Atomic Kitten did well for a number of years, Pussycat Dolls, Destiny's Child for a short while. 2009 comes and Girls Aloud split, Sugababes were effectively dead. The Saturdays launch but don't do massively well and become the default #1 girl group.

Here come JLS to revive the boyband market in 2009, swiftly followed by The Wanted and One Direction and boybands were popular again.

Some that didn't and endured for a long time.

Chronologically....

The Boswell Sisters,
The Andrews Sisters,
The Beverley Sisters,
The Three Degrees
The Bangles.

Girls Aloud had an 11 year run. Spice girls 8 years. Eternal 8 years. All Saints. Atomic Kitten. Destinys Child.

Very recent history may not be favourable towards girl groups but there have been successes over the years. Boy Bands fail too. There is no guarantee for success.

Really?
That might have been the case with Wannabe in the video but later on there was the famous Union Jack dress that Geri wore, and all that PVC and leather

The thing with Little Mix is, they have had it easy, compared to the likes of Neon Jungle, Saturdays, etc. They have had the X Factor and Simon Cowell helping them, so it is no wonder they are successful. Take away The X Factor and let them do it on their own. See how they do then.

They got their current #1 without a Syco tv appearance, or any help from Cowell who hasnt even acknowledged their #1 yet. Try again.

What I've noticed with recent girl groups, not bands, is lack of long term financial commitment to get them more than one hit single, whereas boybands limp along for months.

Haim is doing very well though.

Btw, didnt GA have a 3 year gap in their run? They were together for 8 years in practice.

I don't think that's a fair assessment of Little Mix. They've just scored their first #1 single in 3 years without any promotion on Cowell shows, Cowell actually doesn't do that much in the way of promotion for Little Mix.

Geri made that. it was a plain black dress and Geri sewed the Union Jack on a tea towel on to it. She said that on the Giving You Everything documentary

First of all I'm not a band fan (both male & female), for the most part I see them as over hyped poor singers especially when broken down into their individual pieces. I see them at least in the modern market as manufactured, well packaged (good looking) whose purpose are to grab a certain section of the demographic, the singing ability appears to be very low on the list of priorities!

The key difference between the two for me is that girls are suckers for the manufactured boy band package whereas as the boys not so much for the manufactured girl band package...

The 80's turned up some real pop gems, some great pop singers that had a handful of hit singles (or in some cases just the one) and then disappeared from view. Only to be remembered on 80's compilation albums (if they were lucky) and my iPod!
Let's hear it for;
Joyce Simms who hit the UK top ten in 87 with Come Into My Life,
Debbie Gibson who gave us the really rather wonderful Only In My Dreams UK 11 and
Mari Wilson who gave us the classic Just What I Always Wanted UK number 8 in 1982.

I'd disagree about Girls Aloud. The Spice Girls comeback also was poor in terms of single and album sales. Girls Aloud still had a successful sold out arena tour.

Girls Aloud were a rare exception where they never suffered a decline during their original run. Each album sold more and more and their final tour in 2009 (32 dates) sold out O2 5x over along with Manchester too with their album selling 800,000. It still baffles me they took that break.

anyway - i don't think it is fair to say that all girl bands flop, i am sure that across the board the failure rate is pretty high for all sorts of acts - male and female.
There have been some very succesful girl groups over the years, and Little Mix have just scored their third number one so there is life in the genre yet.
