I thought it was a set up by Keeble so he'd pick Ben and get his immigration case helped in return???? No???

I don't think so. It wasn't in the script so this is just the impression I got, but I think Keeble is following orders from Marsden. Keeble was uncomfortable with how Marsden was running the show but as Marsden is higher there's not much Keeble can do.

However the taxi man clearly states that Max was the other one with Ben, so who knows.

Yeah that's how it sounded to me too.

I didn't get the impression that the witness saw Max & Ben at the same time. I think he saw Max with Lucy on a separate occasion.

I thought that was going to be the case too when she first started talking to him about it but I don't think it was. The immigration chat was just to facilitate him being in Keeble's company when he spotted Max. After all it is Marsden not Keeble who has a grudge against the Mitchells if anyone of the coppers was going to set Ben up it would have been her. Keeble's not bent she does everything by the book.

What I don't understand is why it has taken him nearly 15 months to come forward with this info?!! Its stretching the credibility and I can see this leading to further plot holes which EE may well wish they had not gone down this road by either charging an innocent person or fitting them up.

We know it can't be Ben who gets charged because of Kathy's return. It can't be Max either because Lauren knows the truth and sooner or later she would hear about it and come back and the Beale's would be all sent down. So that leaves only Jay realistically as the only person who would be charged but wouldn't really affect families because he is not a blood relative. I can see the actor hasn't been filming for about the last month too so maybe he is exiting the show but its been kept quiet for the shock outcome.

If he's an illegal immigrant, he understandably would have wanted to avoid any contact with the authorities, I imagine.

Perhaps he was finally rumbled by the Home Office and after seeing the recent news reports about Lucy's death, asked for a deal with Keeble.

He saw Ben when Lucy was putting Jake in his cab at the Common, to take him back to the square. Then he saw Max help Lucy get Jake out of the cab at the square.
