That Z5C size must be a perception thing as it's only a fraction of a mm different to the Z3C.

Moto 3rd gen 2GB/16GB price has dropped £20 and another £10 using the code UKWELCOME10 making it £179. Still only available from Motorola though.

ZTE has a phone called Axon, which was also a Dr Who character, coincidence? I only know this because one of my neighbours played one in the show.

That Z5C Premium was reported to be a hoax.

That's better than £699 for the Premium.
I am not sure when the Premium will actually come out though. It's been said 'from October' but......

Still waiting for a phone to be announced that ticks ALL the boxes.
There is no such thing. We like compact yet for app/web usage the bigger the phablet the better.

Flaws can never be wished away, unless you are a mug, whilst wishlists become infinite.

Of course not one phone can suit all needs, but that's why on paper the idea of having a trio of phones in the Z5 family is a good idea.

The best of Sony with three different sizes.

But the Z5C looks boxy and ugly (and nowhere near premium) and the Z5P has its own flaws.

So, really it's just one phone from three that is the one to get.

I know other people will have different needs, and the tech fan in me says I'd probably still get the Z5P and just get a case to hide the mirrored back, but Sony has dropped the ball on this I think.

But the whole industry is struggling. Just what do you offer that's 'new' these days?

I'll reserve judgement. It is the square book that I find appealing, beats having the sameness of the rest.

If you liked the original Xperia Z, you'll likely like the Z5 and Z5P but I am doubtful you'll like the Z5C. But it's personal taste obviously.

The Z1 Compact is probably the same thickness, maybe even more, but the design hides the thickness.

I am not actually a fan of super thin phones either, but I just don't think the Z5C has anything of note in the design department at all. It looks very cheap. Alcatel and Motorola will sell you bright coloured slabs for a lot less (okay the specs aren't anywhere near the same) but what is the target market for Sony and the Z1C?

Someone who would buy an Alcatel GO or Moto G but wants to pay three times as much for a faster SoC and better camera?

I think the Z3 is still probably the best looking Xperia thus far.

Sony has now set realistic pre-order prices.
Z5 premium £629, Z5 £549 and Z5 compact £429.

They all seem to use that new Sony 23MP ultra fast focus camera.
£525 from Clove UK.

All new Z5's have the brand new Sony camera sensor with the world's fastest autospeed of 0.03 seconds and a brand new camera UI lauching in November via a software update.

The Sony Xperia Z5 features a 23MP 1/2.3-inch Exmor RS rear camera sensor with F2.0 G Lens – it is the first completely re-designed smartphone camera module since the Xperia Z1. Sony says it has been designed in conjunction with Sony’s Alpha α camera engineers. The Xperia Z5 can focus within 0.037 seconds, faster than the blink of a human eye. It also has a 5.1MP Exmor R front-facing camera and 5x clear image zoom.

I am not sure when the Premium will actually come out though.
Z5 and Z5 Compact available from the first week of October. Z5 Premium will be released in early November.

Jon - if the Z5 and Z5P were available tomorrow. Which one would you pick in an instant?

By rights the Z5, but probably the Z5 Premium!

Did you see the photos I uploaded that I took with Z5 at IFA last week? They're good but not stunning.

The fast AF is great though.

I haven't seen them no, but i think everyone has to remember the phones at IFA are not the final retail product, pre-production and all that jazz. I expect they'll be doing some fine tweaking from now until release date.

Is the Z5 Compact really that ugly compared to the Z3 Compact? It certainly is very thick but i don't necessarily find that to be a problem.

Only thing i dislike is that hideous yellow colour!

Here's some samples. The camera was tethered to the stand. Some photos were already on it.

Ta, looks to be good. In other comparisons it does look to be doing a good job on colour balance ... thankfully upgrade is due end of october, so plenty of time for further independent reviews.

The premium is tempting, but it'll depend on the contract price.

The guys from Btekt made a video posted on their YouTube channel where they recorded 4K for 10mins solid where he said in his opinion while the phone felt warm it wasn't overheating to the extend the Z3+ did. He thinks Sony have worked on the overheating and may have solved the problem. He also mentioned the phone was pre-production so the final version may last even longer than the 10mins he had with it.

Xperia Blog has a tear down showing they've got two heat pipes in the Z5 so while it still gets hot, it's nothing like as bad.

For those clamouring after an Ultra Xperia phone, it looks like their wishes may come true.

Rumours abound that a new addition to the Z5 family will be announced next March 2016, a follow-up to the very old Xperia Z Ultra, the Sony Xperia Z5 Ultra.

This Z5 Ultra will sport a gigantic 6.44inch 4K screen, a mammoth 4000mAh battery, 4GB RAM and the brand new Snapdragon 820 chip.

While the new Snapdragon 820 is most appealing, the 6.44inch screen is just WAY too big for me and an instant no-no. Shame.

Why a shame? Sony will have made four high spec variants to suit all tastes. Surely one screen size will be okay?

Absolutely, but it won't be the phone with Snapdragon 820.

Motorola make a point of how much better the new camera is but IMO it's not that much better...
It has the same camera sensor as the Nexus 6 which would put it towards top ratings.
Dxomark claims the S6 range as top rating with the Moto X Style 2nd alongside the Note.

You have to put all things into perpective, the old obsolete G actually succeeding very well in some aspects.

I'm a bit torn on a new phone. I have a Nexus 5 white SIM Free and cracked the screen at the weekend. To be honest I was due an upgrade after 2 years.

I was looking at the Moto X Play but I'm worried the screen quality and PPI is worse than Nexus 5, when I actually want a better screen (not top end but at least better than the last).

I also want expandable memory or at least 32GB of space, fast charging and a battery that lasts a day at least. That is what put me off the G4, the battery.

Finally I don't want to spend more than £250ish. I can get a Moto X Play for £259. I fancied a One Plus Two, but the UI and rubbish battery has put me off and lack of NFC.

Any other suggestions?

Fast charging is useful but it impacts the battery quality long term.
You are accepting lower speed for more battery with the Play, not that many need faster hotter phones.

If stuck go 2nd hand from somewhere like Smartfonestore. £100 gets you an S4 Active if you want extra ruggedity. I'm not sure if it sticks with the usually very stupid flush screen for a quick and easy writeoff on a drop. Manufacturers do love their fragiity!

Thanks, I'm not fussed by ruggedness but fancied a phone that lasts more than the half a day of usage that my Nexus 5 does.

So far the ones catching my eye:

LG G4 (poor battery life)
Moto Play X (slower ram, screen quality)
OPPO R7 Plus (bit out of price range)
Nexus 6 (not sure on battery and seems hard to get now new)

Or do I just wait for the Nexus event at the end of the month!

Well stamna modes should give 2 to 4 days usage. And even that G4 is better than many a last years phone for battery!
