The regular upgrade cycle has ended for Android, Apple has only had 12 months of selling phablets plus this is their very first year of 2GB of Ram.
All good things come to an end, the percentage of upgraders will undoubtably shrink big time. |

I read some GfK data (but can't find it, so it's from memory) that smartphone sales are in decline and down some 20%. Apple may well have bucked this trend because it was late to offer larger screened devices, so people rushed to upgrade.
But it's actually now a replacement market, not a new sales market, and the problem now is that people don't feel the need to upgrade just because their contract is up (although many will if they're paying the higher monthly sub, yet they should switch to SIM only). That's what stopped tablet sales. Once you've got a tablet, why change it? Most people don't use their tablets much, or for anything that even a 2-3 year old one can't cope with. It's now happening with smartphones because even a 1-2 year old smartphone is still up to almost all tasks, and it's only really the fact that the battery might be starting to fail, or you no longer get updates (but do many people care that much? Some people prefer to have a device work as it always did, not be changed massively by an OS update). I change phones all the time, but it's my interest and job. If I stopped tomorrow, I reckon I could live with just about any phone I've had this year or last - and no apps or games that I use would stop working. Apple is clever if it introduces a way to get people to upgrade every year and be locked into a never-ending contract. It will appeal to many, just as many people buy cars for three years and then swap for a new one, continuing to pay a monthly payment that almost gets forgotten about. It's also why we see so many services and applications moving from an outright purchase cost to an ongoing sub. Who cares about that $5 or $10 payment every month, to always have the latest version of an app (whether Microsoft, Adobe or whatever). All research shows that laziness usually means that people take ages to cancel subs, if they ever do at all. |

A lot of people WILL still upgrade because you'd be a fool not to, after all after 24 months the networks won't drop your monthly rental.
Now what happens is that many people don't upgrade straight away, so pay 'money for nothing' or they want to upgrade early, and pay a hefty surcharge. The smart people, which are growing in numbers, will either drop their tariff or negotiate a discount (you can haggle on most networks) and then keep their phone OR buy SIM-free in the first place, and just buy and sell their phones whenever they want. If you do that, you aren't in a position to ever feel compelled to upgrade to 'save money' as in not pay money for nothing. Buy a phone on a credit card and pay it off in instalments if you want, but in most (yes there are exceptions when a network does some amazing deal) cases SIM free phones and SIM only contracts put the consumer in full control. The networks are sort of stuck in that they'd love to get rid of subsidies but on the other hand, would rather lock people in for two years instead of 12 or even 30 days. Vodafone is one network that does seem to be actively promoting SIM only. Three also does great deals. O2 and EE seem to do it only because they must, and don't appear to have any desire to offer competitive rates. But things will change, although I do think SIM only contracts will get more expensive as time goes on - and definitely if more people decide to go down that road (which they really should). Even though it looks terrifying to pay £600-800 for a phone! |

I have just done that...bought the Iphone 6s plus on a sim free deal...6 monthly payments..then its all mine...And only £15.30 for the sim. |

I received my Galaxy S6 Edge + in Gold on Friday and holy cow it is so amazing to look at.
Has there ever been a more attractive phone than this? |

Gotta say the S6 edge plus looks amazing, but beyond looks it doesn't really serve much purpose. After seeing the Note 5 in Germany, I quickly decided that the Note is the one I'd buy.
In fact, if it comes to the UK sooner rather than later, I may well end up getting one. Seems the battery life is okay too, thanks in part to the 14nm process. |

Anyone know if Google will be planning to bring out a new Nexus smartphone in the next year or so.
I have had the Nexus 4 since July 2013 and love the phone but will be maybe looking to get a new phone sometime next year. The Nexus 4 still works mostly fine but it has crashed twice in the last 4 or 5 months. Darren |

Thanks for the two replies and the link. Its good to know that there will be a new Nexus.
I was not thinking of getting a new mobile this side of Christmas but was thinking of getting a new mobile early next year maybe and as I love my Nexus 4 was going to stay with the Nexus brand. If I was to get one of the new Nexus phones I think it would maybe the one made by LG. Darren |

Seems that Ulefone Power launch is imminent. In China it is a battery race so that one has a 6200 mah battery. Theres also Oukitel launching the first ever with 10000mah.

I'm hopeful the new Nexus phones or at least one will have a card slot, thanks to the fundamental change in Android M on how these integrate with internal storage.
It would be ideal for Google in terms of stock control and also users. |

It would be ideal for Google in terms of stock control and also users. Curiously the new Blackberry Android device will incorporate an SD card slot. It almost seems tempting to me. But on the subject of Nexus devices, I'm pretty sure the Nexus 5X or whatever Google decides to call it will be my next. While I think Huawei is quickly transforming into a major player in the international market, I don't feel that their devices are quite ready for prime time just yet. |

The Huawei nexus will be SD810 it seems, and a photo I saw suggests dual SIM.
If there's no SD card then I'm out. Plenty of other choices now. |

No it doesn't, but the Note 5 is a phone I could potentially put up with not having SD (I'd have to get the 128GB model).
Generally speaking, I'd not get a phone without an SD card slot and I hope that in 2016 it will return to Samsung devices. |
