You make a valid point. If you notice what slows down any mobile phone appears to be the OS updates. They release one and we update, however then you slowly notice the phone slowing down. It makes you wonder if its done on purpose to encourage updates to slow your phone down.

Its like my Nexus 4 - its a decent phone and with decent specs, however it does some strange things now, some of which I am sure are bugs with the latest OS and probably caused by a lack of memory / processing power. I think future proofing ...or attempting to is why some people spend more on phones.

Its like all these network branded mobiles - how future proof will they be?

Again with the new Moto X's I'm not sure whether the improvements will be worth the money. I like the look of the Moto X sport but I can see the regular Moto X being similar to that of the G Flex 2, M9 and Z3+ where minor improvements have been made but Snapdragon 810 ruins it.
I hope I am wrong, the Moto X was my primary phone for most of this year and I loved the design but with features like VoLTE, VoWiFi not likely to come to the Moto X 2015 I think I will look elsewhere this year.
I too have been using the Moto X '14 all year and with VoLTE on the horizon I was hoping that maybe the new model would be compatible with? Would be a strange omission. Truth be told I'm not in a hurry to rush out and buy a phone so can wait and see what comes out as the year goes on.

It all depends if Motorola decide to partner with a network(s) this year and how Google decide to implement VoLTE in Android 5.2
I'm also probably going to wait till this winter until I purchase a new phone, I have my hopes up for the LG Nexus but I may upgrade to the Galaxy S6 before then if significant progress is made with VoLTE and VoWiFi by the networks before winter.

I'm not knocking the moto g I've recommended it to countless people on a budget, but what does this years moto g bring that previous years ones haven't? If the 2GB version is indeed Snapdragon 610 with a FHD display then that will be a good improvement but otherwise it brings a small processor upgrade, camera upgrade, waterproofing and an improved design. If the Moto G 2014 falls in price significantly after the release of this years Moto G I will be more inclined to advise people to purchase the 2014 model than this years model.

They were selling the Moto G 2014 in Asda for £56 this week.

I believe that was the 2013 Moto G that was being sold for £56 but it does demonstrate my point that sometimes earlier models can become better bargains than recent low price phones.

It was the 1st Gen G 4G (Vodafone), that received the 5.1 update this week btw.

I was hoping that the new G would have dual band wi-fi and a better camera of course. I'm not sure that dual SIM would be a great advantage if the 3/O2 deal goes ahead, for coverage anyway.

I did (and still do) have a bit of interest in a Samsung Galaxy S6 Active some weeks back when it was released in the US. Large battery and waterproof etc. Not really been a Samsung phone fan but did get to use a family members S6 Edge recently and thought it not too shabby. Any news of a S6 Active release for UK

I did a comparison of the Moto G and E and guess I'll need to update it next week!

Clearly the Moto G hardware has remained mostly the same throughout, so sometimes an older model will indeed suffice if the price is right.

Oh, and I too like the look of the G6 Active, but don't have a clue if it will come to the UK. Given the S6 Edge will be out within a month (well, end of August), it seems unlikely.

There's the thing. I didn't realize that to use VoLTE that both parties need to be on 4G and have a compatible phone. As my area (rural) only has Vodafone 4G I can see progress is going to be slow If the new Moto X is compatible or not it'll not really matter to me for the time being. As I spend very little time on wifi then VoWIFI I'm sure I'll manage without.

What's the largest phone/tablet/phablet that lets you make calls? I remember seeing the Galaxy Note 7 at MWC one year and thinking it was ridiculous. More recently, we've had the Huawei P8 Max, but I am wondering if there's anything higher than 7 inches that can be used as a phone (and I don't mean using Skype or similar on a tablet - something with a microphone and earpiece).

I think tablets are starting to die out, as people are happy with whatever they've got - even if it's getting on for 3 years old and with no chance of any further updates or support. It plays Netflix and surfs the net - job done. It's not that people won't own a tablet, but they'll not be upgrading every year to the latest model, or even every two years. Most likely only when it stops working.

Maybe we'll see Apple with iPad Pro taking the tablet more into the business arena, as Microsoft once tried in the 1980 and 1990s, and phones with 5, 6 or even 7 inch screens will suffice for most ordinary needs. I think most people would now see a tablet as something for productivity, not as a media consumption device (except when travelling maybe).

I think many have thought the same about the tablet market. It was rapid growth and saturation, now very much in decline. The larger smart phones are now making tablets less useful as the phone is with you all the time.

That said 5.7inches sounds like the largest that could be a phone really - it has to be something that fits in a pocket at the end of the day.

Apple of course are now going smaller with things like the iwatch - which seems pointless to me in all fairness.

I guess we can probably nudge up to about 6 inches by removing what remaining bezels there are, although personally I think if you do that you start to struggle to hold/use it - and will invariably end up with the screen covered in finger prints.

5.7 certainly seems optimal, or perhaps even 5.5 inch. Sitting on a train or plane, that's ample for watching a movie as you'll hold the phone fairly close anyway. A tablet may offer an even better experience, but in many environments it's actually too big (while still being too small to ever replace a TV, whatever the resolution).

As for watches, these are way off becoming mass market, must-have, accessories. I love my Pebble Time but I'm definitely one of the few (relatively speaking). I also have very modest needs, wanting a nice watchface, the weather and notifications. I don't use apps and doubt I ever will to any great degree. As such, what I'm looking for is something that in years to come will probably be available on lots of watches costing £50-60 tops.

I am totally unconvinced that there's a market for a watch as powerful as a phone and costing £300-£10k!

SD810 has cursed so many devices this year (only exceptions seem to be tablets, which can cope better with heat).

I can't wait for the year to be over and, hopefully, in 2016 we'll start to see big improvements.

For me I couldn't go bigger then a 5.5inch screen, loosing any more bezel would Start to allow my podgy hands to interfere with the screen at the edges!
Does anyone have experience of the Huawei phablet sized phones, saw one in the three shop in Manchester last week, seemed a nice looking phone.
There are some really useful phones out there now though for a good price, paid under £50 a few months ago for a nice little Sony E3 which supports 4g on three/EE & Vodafone, as I stream most my music via Google music now and use Iplayer radio quite a bit my old ipad 8gb has become redundant, then when you consider the prices of the ipod touch and it's restrictions (i.e not a actual phone) putting a 64gb memory card in the Sony turns it into a great music player for the price, plus a fully functional backup phone for when I'm an idiot and loose my main phone like I did a few weeks ago.
The tablet market and development seems to have ground to a halt this year, there really is no need to upgrade them like phones, I can see some planned obsolescence getting introduced shortly to kickstart the market via the software support route, failing support for apps really is the only way they can force you to upgrade now..

iPhone 6 Plus S for me. Better camera will be good and , more Ram and graphics will fix the issues I have with the current model. Also interested to see what developers do with force touch.

The OnePlus Two does look better than the earlier Tenaa leaks. I'm not sure if I can be bothered to watch the live launch at 3:00, looking at international times they have chosen this time to suit Chinese and American viewers but not European viewers.

Moto X 2015 looks good in white and gold, 99% likely it will be 5.5"
The rugged Moto X maybe called the Moto X Play, you may remember that name from Motorola leaks last year.

Also looks like Europe will get the Note 5, even if after the S6 Edge Plus.

What time is the Moto x meant to launch? I wonder how this will compare on price and features?

2pm local, unless there's two variants of the G, a bit of a disappointment. Not interested in the oversized 5.5 inch X.

2PM, I assume jonmorris will be attending.
It looks like it will have a bigger battery, better camera, front facing flash, front facing speakers, NFC, quick charging, arguably better design.
But more expensive, no laser autofocus, no USB type C, no fingerprint scanner, no notification led (although it has moto display), dimmer display.

I'm going to make guesses on the prices again although I'll be wrong

Moto G Snapdragon 410 1GB 8GB £150
Moto G Snapdragon 410 2GB 16GB £180
Moto X Play (Sport) 5.2" Snapdragon 808 £399
Moto X 2015 5.5" 32GB Snapdragon 808 £459

Don't do that as we get slated otherwise

I think £500 mark is about right though for that sort of package. I think the oneplus 2 is probably winning g my favour based on spec to price ..even though I am worried about that SD processor.

Haha, I'm not sure what finbaars problem with speculation is.
The specifications do match £500, I just wonder if Motorola would go that high, but I've already guessed wrong once already.

Specs to price OnePlus Two wins hands down, but with a Motorola you will get much more quality and better customer service.
