I can check fast charging later but think it was just the Moto X Style (and perhaps the Play).

Some quick questions. One reviewer said the G has quick charge capabilities, the same as the X, true/false? Also, can the video be set to 720 or is it just 1080? Video in stereo? Active viewfinder (recognizes QR codes and barcodes) - really? DC-HSDPA?

Pity it doesn't have more LTE bands like the X.

Just trying to decide if it's worth the change from 1st gen G 4G, or a second hand Sony Z3C.
I don't think it has quick charge capabilities, certainly not in the box anyway. Even if the standard camera app doesn't have 720p you could download another app.
Yes active viewfinder, and DC-HSPA. What other LTE bands would you want?

The US LTE bands would be useful to me.

This afternoon's announcement is now on Youtube; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVu3-c3pHjU

Seems Tesco already have the 3rd gen G 1GB/8GB for sale today for £139, their club boost starts next week, nice.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ will be announced on the 13th August. They are expected to be available in around the 21st August. Sadly the Note 5 looks to have gone with the same design as the S6.

I cant wait to see what the price drop will be on the S6. This could make it a really good phone to purchase at the right price.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini Plus (GT-I9195I) also known as Galaxy S4 Value Edition.

It features the same tech specs as the standard Galaxy S4 mini except the Value Edition has an improved chipset. The Galaxy S4 mini plus has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 SoC with a 64-bit architecture, as opposed to the original Snapdragon 400 chipset which had a 32-bit architecture.

I think the price drop in RRP will be about £70 or so and will be announced soon as it has just happened in the Netherlands. Whether the price drop will trickle down to consumers or will just be sucked up by retailers is another thing.

The LG nexus leaks show promise, rear fingerprint scanner, laser focus, small body, possible front facing speakers which would be a first from LG if I'm not mistaken.

Sony Z5/Compact also due out this fall with side fingerprint scanner like the Nubia Z9 Ultimate Edition, I'm not sure what will be done about the processor issues though.

Xiaomi Mi 5 may or may not be shown at the MIUI 7 event in August.

Motorola make a point of how much better the new camera is but IMO it's not that much better;
http://www.slashgear.com/camera-test...inal-31395179/

Not sure Motorola make a 2GB RAM, Dual SIM Moto 3rd Gen for the UK, shame. Don't like the hot water bottle styled diagonal ribbed backs either.

People and media highlighted the bad features of the previous camera but now they highlight the good features of the old G camera.
Funny that.

The old Moto G camera wasn't that bad. Sure, that and even the Moto G 3rd Gen camera can't hold a candle to the Galaxy S6 or LG G4, but let's get some sense of perspective.

For taking a photo that you show to others on the screen, or upload and share on social media, the camera is just fine. Zoom in and there's quite a lot of detail even on the 5MP version, while the 8MP camera was acceptable (but, how many people ever zoomed in? The point is that on the nice 720p screen, your photos and video played back look good).

The camera was simply never something people raved about, but I can't recall seeing anyone moaning about the camera either (and even now the 2nd Gen Moto G represents a good buy if you can find one going very cheap). Motorola now wants to have people starting to look at Motorola as a company that can compete with LG, Sony, Samsung etc in the camera imaging department.

The Moto G has always been a very affordable phone with a slick, non-f'd up Android skin, and even with just 1GB of RAM never had issues (bar issues caused by Google and the mess of Android Lollipop before 5.1.1) and the new one is simply an improvement. It's still a third of the price of a flagship Samsung or LG.

Waterproofing is a nice addition, while now having just one front facing speaker is an odd step backwards. The battery is good, the screen is fine (viewable at all angles and bright for outdoor use), and it happily takes a 64, 128 or 200GB card so you can pack it with media. It's Cat 4 4G too. No 5GHz Wi-Fi, still, is about my only complaint.

I reviewed the £40/50 EE Rook. That has a 5MP fixed focus camera and that IS bad. Zoom in even slightly and you wonder where all the detail is. It's horrible. The Moto G (and the Moto E) was NEVER like that. The new Moto G even records 1080p video now.

Odd coincidence that, my Nokia C7 had two speaker ports but only one that actually worked. The only reason I can think of the new Moto not having dual band wi-fi is to differentiate between the models. Can't really be a cost thing?

The 1st Gen camera is not so bad but the noise reduction spoils the photo, giving it a water colour effect. In good light it's OK. I know someone who used his for a shop fascia sign, quite a big enlargement for a phone camera. With the latest camera update, you can change the brightness.

My home computer can't really handle 1080p video but I could down sample it later?

Some reviewers say there's a big drop in quality between the 4.5 inch and 5 inch but I haven't bothered to check yet, I've only had my Moto since Jan anyway.

Motorola says it can only take 32GB cards but you say it can take more?

If Tesco ever sells the 2GB version I might be interested with the double clubcard discount offer. Why does Amazon France sell it but not Amazon UK?

Well there's a new 200mm-500mm f5.6 Nikkor coming up so that'll get priority over a new phone.

Moto says 32GB but not only do I say it can take more, I can provide it as my 3rd gen has a 128GB card in it! The old models work too, and I previously had a 64GB card (also SDXC).

I think they're great phones. They're not trying to beat flagships but a lot of people don't actually need the extra performance of the phones costing 3-4 times more.

It was well moaned about as a reason to buy a more expensve phone.
It is about perspective. No one moans about the quite dated camera in the iphone 6

I am on a fair few camera sites/forums and clearly you can talk in great depth about the quality of image sensors and lenses, and post-processing (which makes a big difference) but I do think a lot of people can (and do) make do with far less, and not actually feel that they're missing out.

This is of course why the whole industry is starting to struggle as smartphones reach saturation point and even people who work with tech every day aren't anywhere near as impressed when a new phone is announced. With sales in emerging markets also starting to slow, it's not great for manufacturers.

technosamigos.com/meizu-m2-review-specs-features/

The $99 Meizu M2 is impressive, at least in emerging markets with consumer cost constraints.

Edit -Impressive marketing tactics too .

I've been considering the Z3 Compact. I was hoping for a Z4 Compact, or a Z3+C if that's what they call it. Why do you think the Z3+ should be avoided? If there isn't to be a Compact version of it soon, I may get the over-sized one instead.

The Sony Z5C interests me.
Do you mean the same phone?

The Z3+ has basically the same specs as the Z3 except for a newer SoC, the Snapdragon 810. This runs very hot in most phones and seems to be regarded as a dog. The Z3 is cheaper, is fast and has better battery life. Sony are good with updates as well and the Z3 will be supported for quite a bit.

I'm not posting the link to El Reg but todays Moto G reviews leaves me asking how a seasoned tech journalist can appear thick as pigshit on a few points?

I also preferred the G photo used to back up maybe contrived negativity. It is exectly like I said about the original G, a small chink in the camera gets was overplayed.
Nothing here has changed whatsoever, the reviewer I see as going out of his way to continue that very same perception.

Was it always like this, 'dog with bone' tech journalism?http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/08...id_smartphone/
