Its in tonights echo that radio city will no longer carry match commentary for Liverpool and Everton after 40 years..Bauer have finally achieved their goal and destroyed this station..the one thing left that was good about the station is now gone..

Similar to when Capital Gold lost football commentary. Thankfully, we have BBC London.

Campaign are also reporting that they are going down to 7 hours local programming too.
I think Bauer are just about completing the destruction they started last year by replacing very average local output with even worse network output. Sadly no-one cares anymore!

Still a sad day as it was the station I grew up with in the 80s on Merseyside.

End of an era for City. There's no other commercial station in the area that will pick up the rights though, so Bauer have nothing to worry about.

They've now done exactly what Global have done, but just dithered about for a few years, gradually cutting local output whereas Global had the balls to do it all in one go.

Yes indeed.

The Midweek Match with Clive Tylsley.

Happy times for an Everton fan!

So Rossie's days are numbered too..so sad, and with juice on the line too, local Ind radio is all but gone

no doubt they will claim it's all the bbc's fault (as they do with everything else)

Rossie is safe (for now)....I think Campaign have misunderstood. There is no application to make any change to Radio City 96.7 - this solely concerns 105.9FM and 1548AM.

My reading of it is that the local hours reduction refers to 105.9 and is as a result of it no longer broadcasting the late night phone in.

I think you're probably right although the reduction to 7 hours doesn't require a consultation. Under the plan there will be all day hourly local bulletins on City 2 so a simulcast of these would qualify 96.7 for a reduction to 7 hours.

I suspect it is all to do with a format change or rather switch which Bauer has made. Effectively Radio City 2 will broadcast on 105.90 with it's own local breakfast and drive time show and an enhanced news service. City Talk will become Radio City Talk on 1546 and both stations will presumably continue to broadcast on DAB and on line. My money would be Rossie will eventually switch to the City2 breakfast show allowing 96.7 to be networked between 1000 and 1500hrs. This would allow Pete Price to remain on the late night slot possibly on a City 2, but otherwise on Talk. Interestingly the present arrangements allow for Talk to simulcast with City 2 network for up to 10 hours provided the broadcast originates in England. I'm struggling to think of any time this has been allowed.

Full spec details of the changes on the Ofcom website at http://stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk/bin...ary/condoc.pdf

It's just a name now that's all. Radio City has long since deceased.
They might as well do a Free Radio and give them all a new name and be done with and let the old names die a death

Thanks for the link to the Ofcom document.

So Radio City Talk as the AM service will be known will apparently focus heavily on sport in its speech output, which makes me wonder whether the Liverpool Echo article about football commentaries being dropped from 96.7 is because they're moving exclusively to City Talk?

City 2 already has a networked music and sport show on Saturday afternoon whilst Absolute Radio on DAB already carries a live commentary each Saturday so there could be some networking being done, including Talk taking the City 2 sports show. Interestingly City Liverpool staff appear to be provide the daily sports bulletins on Absolute so it does seem a strange decision to cease the commentary output when Talk is going to be so reliant on sports output.

I'm not sure how the local radio broadcast rights are awarded, the national rights are negotiated with the Premier League which means Talk Sport and the BBC have the main picks with just one match being awarded to Absolute. City had already lost it's coverage of European Football last season so perhaps the writing was on the wall as I suspect a large proportion of the cost would be borne by the sponsors and if one or more cannot be found, then clearly it may be difficult to financially cover the cost. Another complication is now with so much networking in the programming, it becomes increasing difficult to fit match commentary into the schedule especially when matches this season could be broadcast virtually every day of the week with Premier League games now also due to be played on a Friday night.

Forgive my ignorance has something similar happened on Metro regarding football commentary.

Isn't the case that in the real glory days of Radio City (the seventies and early eighties) there were no regular football commentaries on the station? I seem to recall ILRs not providing (or not being able to provide) commentaries in their early years.

I wondering if Clyde 1 is going to axe their football commentary down the line?

No. They have always had it.

Ofcom should get tough and ban BAuer from playing music or networking on any of their stations that broadcast to Liverpool when Liverpool or Everton are playing. They should also demand that 105.9 FM is sold. The ban on music and networked sprogramming should be extended to all other areas where Bauer own local independent stations.

This further justifies moving to commissioning independent local radio services every two years. Would Bauer do this if, next year, a rival could bid for the licences and offer to restore local football commentary? Would Global network on Heart in Sussex on a Tuesday night if a rival could take the licence and put Brighton and Hove Albion matches on the station, providing an independent alternative to the BBC?

I think the problem for them with the football is that it's supposed to fill the Saturday 2pm to 6pm slot but increasingly games for both sides are being played outside those times. That makes it difficult. How many Saturday 3pm's did they have last year? Everton have a ton of games from Saturday moved for Europa League and this year Liverpool in that bracket. I still think it's a mad call but that'll be the big factor I suspect.

stations normally bid for exclusive rights ....nobody has bid for man utd rights for years ...why would heart want b+hfc coverage espescially when its required 4 hours local programming is on

This is a crazy decision.

As soon as the audenice get wind of this come the start of the new season, I think there will be a massive reaction towards the station. Radio City have always had football commentary on at the weekends throughout the years. It is one of the things that helps Radio City stand out from the crowd.

If they are not careful, the station will eventually loose that massive feel it's had.

Somebody in the know needs to get this error corrected as soon as possible. The football coverage has always been a massive crowd puller in the area.
