Ah the early BB years, based on the classic format. It was all so innocent back then. Even in it's 2nd series the show was very much an experiment. Relationships, good or bad, seemed to happen quite naturally with the odd nudge from Big Brother via tasks. The housemates were more themselves really.
Of course, we did have the wannabe media personality, but only Narinder to my mind sticks out as being one of them. Brian Dowling love or loathe him had the personality already, whilst Helen was just unknowingly hilarious. Remember Penny? the one who drove everyone mad, the first example of a big character being the first out and continuing long tradition of a woman being the first out.
It was a much more gentle approach to Big Brother compared to the beast we have today. It was the following year, Big Brother 3 that I remember "the twist" becoming a thing. The rich/poor house divide was brilliant to watch, and there were some really big characters like Alison, Johnny, Kate (winner) Adele, the real winner of course being Jade Goody. This was also the first year that Big Brother took place in Elstree, the house it occupies now.
Unfortunately, Big Brother 4 or Big Brother Snore is when the Producers tried to bring Big Brother "back to basics" much in the fashion of Big Brother 1 and 2, after the often pantomime goings on of Big Brother 3. However, it didn't work. It was dull, even Davina herself said much later, it was very dull. And it is remembered today as being the most boring series.
Hence! we got Big Brother 5. Evil Big Brother! This is the year that Big Brother in itself became ruthless, out to cause mayhem. The smallest house ever, with lots of weird angles, one small bedroom for all the housemates and packed with just bonkers personalities like Jason, Victor, Marco, Kitten, Nadia, Michelle, Emma. This was the series that had the infamous fight night. And it seems that most years since, has had their own version. Indeed, on Channel 5 this year, every week had a fight night. In Big Brother 5 though, Fight night was shocking. This is the year Big Brother truly lost it's innocence.....but I loved it!
Big Brother would get more heated as the years went on, but I think it was Jade vs Shilpa where Channel 4 got cold feet and said ok enough. The viewers began to turn off in the following years and to me, Channel 4 gave up. They saw out their contract and said goodbye.
Channel 5 have revived Big Brother and it's really a gameshow. It's reliant on big personalities, twists, rivalries and fighting all engineered by Big Brother. And it seems to be working. It's very entertaining but compared to the early years of Big Brother 2001, it is a monster!
