The Truth about Hollyoaks
Recent episodes of Hollyoaks have actually been like an episode of Family Guy but without anything actually funny.
Wouldn't be surprised if they were casting a talking dog. |

They'll also need Peter Griffin style flashback scenes/tangents in the course of conversations.
Oh and a Mexican maid like Consuela. |

Hollyoaks has been good with the Trevor, Grace, Esther and psycho kim storyline, the abuse storyline with the mcqueens, Tom and peri but the other storylines such as repetive joke affairs especially the one with Lockie pretending he is an gambiling addict.
I coudnt stop laughing at the GA meeting with lockie, it was like some bbc 3 comedy sitcom. |

Not seen the new ones but they can't possibly be as bad as the new Simpsons! But I mean how they use every stereotype and make jokes out of serious issues like it's nothing. A show like family guy can get away with it, but a soap really shouldn't.

They could always follow the example set by Sunset Beach, and have a baby and dog talk to each other via their thoughts:

I watched the e4 Hollyoaks episode for the first time in years just to check if it got as bad as people were saying here and it was absolutely woeful. Even the worst BBC3 sitcom couldn't compare to this rubbish - have seen better acting and storylines on CBeebies!

https://youtu.be/5NL8S7-gBjU?t=24 It's weird, b/c HO was more like Sunset Beach when it incorporated flashbacks and fantasy sequences, than it is now trying to mix serious and OTT melodrama together. The show has become a joke. It's like a bad telenovella, and they don't even realize it. |

Forgive me, this is just a more general observation as I have not actually watched a full episode in many years since both me and my younger sister moved out of the parental home – a long time ago. I do know plenty of people who watch a lot of different soaps so find it useful to keep an eye on the non-Holby ones I don’t watch.
Based on what I am see on this board and in other places, and what acquaintances tell me – as well as the slating, nay demolition my sister gave it recently having accidentally seen a whole episode recently for the first time in years – I believe the problem is this – Hollyoaks is not about anything. The original concept was strong – a small, tight-knit group of late teen, early twenty-something kids facing the world, learning, growing and developing whilst surrounded by their wider network of family and friends. I watched this period, I enjoyed it, I was the target-audience. I remember Dawn dying on the boat as poor Jambo had just popped the question, I was unspoiled and therefore shocked by Natasha’s overdose and death, I prayed for Rob Hawthorne to get his comeuppance….That was real Hollyoaks to me, something that had its own angle and something to say. Clearly though it’s shifted from something with a concrete purpose into something that had no end in-sight and no central ethos or purpose. To survive as just one of any number of soaps it had to become more and more sensationalist and less and less rooted in the real-world in-order to keep their audience’s attention, try to grab ever younger viewers and have some kind of hook when faced with a huge amount of competition (the Big Three, regional, Australian and US soaps and even the Holby-verse). It became exactly like the opposition and lost whatever had given it its charm in the first place…. Question to the fans out there, do you think it might have been better for them to have developed it as a Telenovela i.e. a soap opera but one that has a definite ending of perhaps a few years long and then stop after say the core of the Cunningham family began to break-up with maybe the occasional short tie-in In the City-type stint? I’d be curious to know what you think…. |

NMdum I agree. Hollyoaks has lost its original purpose and the hospital is dire. It always used to be funand outlandish but now they're trying to go for the so bad it's good' thing.

That was a spoof of Look's Who's Talking.

It's like a bad telenovella, and they don't even realize it. It's like SB - you knew it was going to be crazy and keep stories going by adding even more insane bits but it made a twisted funny kind of sense and the characterisation was always the same They didn't drop stories due to block or forget stuff |
