My gran's Samsung LE40M86BDX TV has developed a fault turning itself on at random times when in standby (usually in the middle of the night!). Now it makes a clicking sound for 10 seconds before turning itself on. The TV is about 7 years old and out of warranty. The only fix for her is to unplug it every time it's not in use but that's not very practical for her as the plug is behind a unit and she's 90 in September!

Anyone any idea what could be causing this?

It'll be the power supply board. Almost certainly several capacitors will have gone bad.

It should be possible to fix, but it involves soldering.

It's almost certainly a fault with the internal power supply on the TV. Could be costly to get fixed unless you know someone with the practical skills. If it is awkward to get behind the TV unit to switch it off at the mains socket then perhaps fit an extension socket cable with switched outlets in between, that is placed where it can be easily accessed.

Some Samsung panels used really cheap capacitors on the power board and there was a big fuss about it a while ago. This sounds like the same thing that happened to mine, I found a local TV repairman and opened up the set and sent him the board, he replaced the faulty ones and posted it back - my TV has worked perfectly since then. Fifty quid, a bargain.

Samsung offered free repairs to some, although they wanted over £125 call out just to send someone to look at mine, so would avoid them unless you are covered.

If the capacitors are faulty they will bulge outwards, you would have to take the back off your set and look at the power board though, or just take it to a repair shop. I couldn't drive mine to the shop so that's why I went DIY.

You can get plug in power adaptors which can turn the power on and off using a remote control

http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/remote-con...s-5-pack-n38hn

May help your gran not only with the TV but with other devices which need powering on and off from awkward to reach switches.

Not strictly true - they 'may' be bulging (in which case they ARE faulty), but they may well look perfectly fine and still be faulty (in which case you use an ESR meter to check them).

Thanks for all the replies. I wasn't sure if there was some menu you could go to to do with power settings as I was going to around later and have a look at it for her.

These look ideal. I'll nip through to Maplin & get a set before I go and visit her.

I think I know what we can now get her for her birthday! I'm sure the family will chip in to get her a new TV

The TV will fail sooner or later, mine did. Wouldn't it be better using the money getting it fixed. I have those power plugs and they are great but I use them for saving money when I'm not using my audio equipment. All those watts in standby add up.

I don't think it's a fault at all. All of my devices can be heard doing this at certain times of the day and I think it's simply automatic checking for software updates.

Thanks, I'll try that tomorrow. When I went round today, she said that it hadn't turned itself on again but when she tried to turn it on herself, it just kept clicking & took around 1 minute to power up.

After doing a bit more searching on Google, I found an AV forums thread about faults with transistors is some TVs made in 2007/08 & people were getting their's repaired for free, even went out of warranty. I've mailed Samsung to find out.

Also bought her those remote socket adapters and set them up for her. They're nifty little inventions. Think I'll get a couple for myself!

Whenever I reset my TV to factory settings, the TV's auto services turn on again. If you decide to do a reset go through the menu, section after section and turn those off. Another tip i read on the Samsung website is to unplug the TV for about 30 seconds and after switching it back on check for firmware updates.

Just how often often do you do a factory reset?

In theory should never be needed.

my tv isn't calibrated, so it's okay. it has both a freeview and freesat tuner, internet access and apps through its built-in wifi which i also update regularly. it just saves me time.

Trailing extension lead and a 90-year-old pensioner!! ...not a very good mix.
The remote socket has already been fitted, so a better job done already

Just a note for the OP however, if the problem IS with dodgy capacitors, you may find that constantly switching on and off from the mains will send the caps finally over the edge, with them failing completely. Best to get them looked at ASAP if they are indeed the problem.
