I've just bought one of these to replace an old Humax-HDR that keeps randomly turning off the screen, very annoying.

Re the 1100S I just read this in a John Lewis review

" When switched on (after quite a delay each time) you are shown an overlay which is intrusive and you have to press buttons just to see the programme you switched off."

Can anyone who has one confirm that it actually does boot up to an overlay display and not straight to a TV channel? This is going to be really annoying if it's true.

Yes - it does - one press of exit is all that is needed to dismiss it (it also times out).
This was one 'feature" that freesat added.
Have got used to it now, I think the idea was to display the home menu..

Well picked it up today, and find it fine, as said above, just a quick press of the Exit button gets rid of the overlay, its no trouble at all, great little box tbh, no problems with it at all so far.

Had a look at this in Curry's the other day, absolutely unbelievable how cheap and nasty looking it is, it really is Fisher Price. Everything about it spells cost cutting, the quality of the silver logo and buttons on top is embarrassing. The cheap plastic its made of and cheap connections on the back are just awful, and they expect people to pay £190 plus for this. I would be embarrassed to have this on show under my TV, i would have to hide it away. This was the white version, but i doubt the black version is any better.

I am going to look for the older HDR-1000S model, they were not that great looking or build quality either, but is miles ahead of the HDR-1100S.
Even though i am not in the market for one of these anymore, i did take another look at them tonight as i was in Curry's and wanted to see if they had a black one in just to see if it was as hideous the white one i looked at a few weeks ago. Well the black one is much better, the quality and finish are on par with the 1000s, which is by no means fantastic, but is perfectly acceptable and i wouldn't be embarrassed to have it sitting under my TV. So why the white one is so hideous i don't know, but there is nothing really wrong with the black one, it looks fine if not spectacular.

Changed mine to 1080p, as read thats better than 1080i (the default), sharper image, better for motion.

Btw, ive got the white one, and think it looks great, prefer it to the black

What are the non-Freesat mode capabilities like on the HDR 1100S? I still use an old Humax Freesat box because I like to have play about now and then.

You can view non-freesat channels and that's it. No recording.

I was with you on the white until you admitted to going into a Currys store - you lost me after that I'm afraid.

Care to elaborate.

I cant work out if you can't understand my post or you are being sarcastic about curry's.

I am quite sure he means the latter.
However at no point did you admit to taking to their staff

What I don't understand is why they can't make a cheaper box that doesn't have all the extra bumf included

I don't need a box that bundles in "catch up" services, I have a different box that already does this. And I certainly don't want a box that makes suggestions as to what I should watch

I just need a box that will decode a broadcast signal, and save it onto a hard disk for later viewing.

I don't need any of the other **** that must all 100 quid to the price!

Just why can't I just have that

In hardware terms it adds under a pound. All the hard work is in the chipset. There are software costs to add but nearly all the code would already be written for all singing and dancing models.

why not look for a G1 unit off ebay?

That's only true if the source is 1080p. The source in this case is 1080i. Selecting 1080p on the box deinterlaces to produce 1080p. If you select 1080i the TV does the interlacing. Which looks best depends on whether the box or TV gas the best de-interlacing capability. I can't see any difference at all on my Panasonic TV.

You can (just not from Humax), just look for Freesat+ boxes.

Just got one of these. Excellent box, I find the interface much more intuitive and less cluttered than Sky's. Recording quality seems spot-on. Very fast UI, though the animations are not "100% smooth". As noted it's not the prettiest thing in the world, but what matters to me is whether it works.

Gripes:
- Very 'clicky' remote and volume control controls the Humax box not the TV. Will get a universal remote sometime.
- Remote record doesn't work if the unit is on standby (regardless of power saving setting), at least in my experience, rendering it useless if you have any concern for energy saving as you'd have to have it on 24/7 with no auto-standby. Others report that it fires up every 20 minutes to check but this has not been my experience.
- It's very fussy about the TV's HDMI - it seems well known on the forum that any of the "intelligent" HDMI features (HDMI-CEC) that a TV has needs to be switched off or it can cause issues like the box refusing to turn on until the power is pulled and re-plugged. I've had this happen twice so far (only had it a day) even though I do have Viera Link switched off already so this could be a showstopper.

Not certain yet if those last two are signs of a faulty box.

Sky+HD is on all the time which is why it can always accept the remote record signal. (It has the low power standby where it is basically a brick and doesn't even wake up to record).

I had this problem with both my Humax PVR and ended up getting a couple of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...ilpage_o01_s00 that solved the problem stone dead. (The Freesat box was the HDR-100S which I believe is the same as your model but with a display).

True. Guess I'm expecting a bit much, just kind of hoped it might do the 20 minute check for remote record instructions it allegedly does (according to users on the humax forum and in line with what the manual suggests is possible) and that if it does, it might do so via a routine loaded into RAM instead of having to fire up the HDD. As it stands, remote record appears to not work at all if in standby.

Thanks for the link - may look into one of those adapters if I have any more trouble. Murphy's law such as it is, I can't replicate the issue reliably I.e. It's worked ever since.

If you have the freesat app paired with box, it should wake from sby approx. every 20 minutes to check for recording reservation changes.

What software version do you have on the box ?

You could make a note of your recording schedule and carry out a factory reset.

If your software is up to date and the problem persists I would get it replaced.

I wonder if this would help my problem - I use one of those cheap and nasty HDMI auto switchers where you can't disable the auto switching. Whenever the Freesat box decides to wake up, it causes the switch to switch over to it. Very annoying

Afraid not, these devices auto select the last powered on device detecting the DC power applied to the port. A manual switch should sort it out if you can't give the box it's own dedicated hdmi port.

Kind of resolved, it's doing the 20 minute check now (you can hear it spin up, the TV flickers and indeed it records what it was remotely asked to). I reverted the power saving settings back to their defaults: on the box it's set to auto standby on and power saving on, and on the app the switch for power saving is OFF (no idea why this doesn't match, but there we go) and things started working.

The way things are described when reading the instructions that are scattered around the internet for this box, it sounds like disabling the power saving will speed up remote recording commands. Instead, it seems to kill them off completely (it doesn't do the 20 minute spin-up). All in all I have a suspicion that the power saving preference isn't implemented correctly and things just break if you turn it off - it could be that the manufacturers have assumed that people won't fiddle with it and so only the defaults work.

As it stands I'll probably unpair it anyway (or set it back to the broken setting ) - having the HDD spin up every 20 minutes would bug me, especially since it's in my bedroom.

Not had the power-on problem since, so not sure what that was about.

Version is 2.02.46 from 20 Jul 2015

In the absence of a display, no one seems to know just what power saving in sby turns off to save power.
