Can the new boxes play any other AV files not recorded on the box?
For instance, if I rip a movie from a dvd or blu-ray can i play it on the box from an external HDD, dongle or some other way? I have lots of .ts files recorded from my current foxsat hdr - would those play? |

I've just ordered a HDR1100S for delivery this evening and so will be able to answer my own question soon - but does anyone know if the new boxes have a faster chipset? I asked on Amazon and nobody answered my question.
I find the 1000S I have to be quite slow at times. Not terrible, but certainly not 'fluid' and hope the 1100S that I'll have in the living room to replace a Sky box, now I'm leaving Sky for good, will be as responsive as you expect from user interfaces these days. As I said, I'll be able to see if there's an improvement in the next few days - but it's near impossible to find out the actual specs of the Humax boxes (and I've certainly looked). I assume Humax doesn't quote hardware specs either, as reviewers don't seem to mention this either. As such, I was a little disappointed as the scaling of the picture is still glitchy, and there can be the odd lag when navigating menus/channels in the guide. It's not a massive deal breaker, but I did expect a bit more for a newer model. Still, it's not as if we're swimming in a sea of boxes to choose from! |

All the twin tuner G2 boxes use the same software so hardware must be very similar. Main difference is earlier models have a display and scart. 1100S no scart (has analogue outputs on RCA phono sockets) and no display. Minor issue with blu-ray. blu-ray is 1080p24, the box plays back at 25fps resulting in some motion artefacts. Only device I have that will play 1080p24 properly is using USB on my blu-ray player. |

Thanks, Graham. I hadn't heard of Nowster so I'll be taking a look at that.
Regarding the 1100s and its sister boxes, apart from DLNA, how do you get it to see the files? Is it external usb hard drive a la hdr and custom firmware is not possible? Is there still a limit to large file sizes using usb (I seem to remember having trouble with files over 4gb)? Thanks againg for your help. |

Playing back files stored on your network which are accessible to DLNA streaming software is simple. Home - Humax - Media Share Brings up a list of DlNA servers on your network. My Foxsat is [Foxsat-HDR] TwonkyMedia. Clicking OK gives you rootmusic, rootpicture or for video rootvideo. My two HDR FOX T2's and my Smart TV is also listed. Selecting allvideos lists all the .ts files on the Foxsat. |

To install the patch you need to install the Custom Firmware add on. The freetime boxes support NTFS so there is no 4GB limit when using usb. That woudn't apply anyway when streaming as the source takes care of reading the File System. The custom firmware is required to install a DLNA server on the Foxsat. For HD the unencrypted .ts files need converting (convertfiles package). otherwise you get the audio described track on the freetime box.

Anyone missing 5 HD catchup when scrolling back on the TV guide? On mine it is just showing as blank??
Also why is Channel 4 HD not in the 104 epg slot as there is no regional variation? |

I bought one of these boxes. I was excited because I'd saved up for it. Previously I had a Manhattan PVR which I was happy with, but it was quite basic and didn't always automatically udate when new channels were added.
I am pleased to say I love the Humax box. I don't get the "but it looks cheap" comments, because I think it looks very elegant and is a nice, modern design. I like all the features, I like the clicks on the remote, I actually think the remote is very smart looking. There is nothing I dislike about it at all - apart from the irritating "For more information or a reminder press OK" banner that appears at the bottom of the screen each time a trailer comes on so you have to press exit on the remote. Apart from that, it is an excellent box and it does so much. For those who say that there's no recording light, well, the led light underneath (red for standby, blue for on) goes pink when it's recording or in playback mode. I have the white version and when you consider what it does, it costs just £60 more than a standard freesat recorder, which you can't get anymore. Thankfully, I have a spare, brand new Bush Freesat recorder incase I ever need it, but my Humax box is probably the best thing I'll have bought this year. |

I don't find it irritating, its really useful as it saves you finding it in the guide. Steve |

Unless they have changed something since the older design, you don't have to press exit, you just wait and it vanishes by itself.

Just had an update to my 1100s, and its gone tits up, was set to record Quincy, but when the light never changed to its purple colour for record as normal, i thought it hadn't started, so i switched it on to check (was watching something on the PC so couldn't hear if it was going), and noticed it had a new Fressat logo screen coming on, and it was recording.
Also, my recordings disappeared too, was still saying 9% used, but had no recordings there, just had the standard no recordings have been made yet message, but then after a bit, they reappeared. ![]() Light just stays red now all the time, no more Blue for on, Red for Off, Purple for record. Just wondering if my recordings showing up after a bit, is because it now seems to come on instantly when switched on, will check after Quincys finished recording. |

Nope, its broken, timeshift no longer works
![]() I popped Quincy on to make sure it had recorded, it started playing, but started from the end of Minder, so tried to skip it along to Quincy, but can't do it, just keeps saying can't timeshift while retrieving data, try again in a few seconds, or something like that, and can't even stop it from playing or anything, pressed the guide button to bring that up, was all blank, only way to stop it playing was to knock it off and back on, but noticed the light does go Blue still when its on like before. Recordings are still taking a few seconds or so to appear though, after switch on. EDIT: also when popping the info bar on, on a recording, it doesn't appear, instead of the blue time bar, i just get a blank now and next Tv guide bar. EDIT2: Forget all that, its working ![]() I switched it off (via the remote), and just left it off until the HDD stopped going (parked), before switching back on, and it booted up as normal like before, got the HUMAX Freesat screen, then after a few seconds, the new Freesat logo screen came on, before the picture at the top right with the guide, tried my recordings, all there straight away, and can play/stop, Skip etc..., and get the blue time bar. |

I found with mine that since the new software was installed that the box takes about 10 seconds to display the TV picture from Standby, it was a lot faster than that before

I would guess that displaying a picture has been delayed until the end of the boot process. Previously there were indications the remote was not yet being serviced and other tasks were not complete.

Standby: Power Saving vs. Normal
The 1100s is reputed to use 0.5W in standby when set to Power Saving mode. Any idea what the power rating is for Normal mode?

![]() On the other HDR-10x0S models it enables the clock on the display. The HDR-1100S does not have a display but does have the same user interface. |

Do these boxes have access to nowtv?
I'm currently debating wether to get one of these for £150-£180 (unless someone can tell me where they can be had cheaper?) Or getting an ariel fitted and getting one of the refurbished BT youview boxes from Amazon. |
