I thought Shirley was vile to Max by making fun of him working in the chippy. That was really mean and people who work in the chippys would get offended.

Shirley worked in McKlunskys back in 2012-2013. She's a big hypocrite.

The worst part of it was that it didn't make any sense. Yeah we know Shirley is vile to a lot of people but when did she or any of her family have scenes/storylines with Max Branning? Maybe she served him at the Vic when she worked for the Mitchells but I am struggling to remember any conversation either of them had.

The Carters/Wicks' never had any dealings with the Brannings unless you count Tina's current relationship with Sonia (Jim's granddaughter). But nothing bitter or acrimonious. Shirley used to be quite friendly Dot when Heather was around, and she recently showed a softer side when she helped Carol (Max's sister) overcome her fears.

She is vile to mainly Sharon and Linda. She hates Ben's guts although that's understandable after what he did to her best mate.

It wasn't nice. But if it had been Phil winding him up it would have been the funniest thing ever....go figure.

Shirley is toxic. I understand that it was a light heartened scene but that was very nasty of Shirley to snigger at Max in the Fish&Chips shop, take a photo of Max wearing his uniform and teasing him by saying he can have the extra 50p. Shirley really needs to get her comeuppance one day. I wish Max had the balls to stand up to Shirley and say "it's better than being a prostitute" because I bet Shirley used to be a hooker in the old days.

OP you better be prepared for the Shirley army to defend her Apparently she can do no wrong on here.

Well then he would lose his much-needed job in the Fish n Chip shop as Ian was standing right next to him?

Don't care so much for the Shirley hate to be honest, she is a fantastic actress and one of my favourites.

I totally agree - it just made no sense whatsoever. I'm wondering if the scene was originally written with another character in Shirley's place and she maybe had to step in at the last minute due to illness or something

I was mystified. I mean, what is Shirely's job? Poor Max before coming to Walford he was a high flying businessman bringing home 15k pm now he is being laughed at by Shirley - Shirley!- while at his new job in the chipshop. Surely he must have some connections in his old business circles?

Now, now. You know that's not true. She was out of order, no doubt about that, but vile, toxic etc....hardly.

I can't defend Shirley as it wasn't very nice but in the same episode you had Phil manipulating Abi into shopping her dad to the police and the Beales continuing to keep quiet about Bobby. Yet Shirley's innocuous scene with Max is the thing that warrants a thread full of comments like "toxic" and "vile".

I love that it's the same people who complain about certain other characters being criticised.

There was nothing innocuous about it. It was mean spirited, horrible and unprovoked. Phil was a dick to Stacey last week but she'd been making a scene in front of everyone so even though his comment was uncalled for and ignorant at least it had context. Shirley's comments to Max had none.

Considering you made a mountain out of a molehill regarding Sharon's non reaction to Phil's behaviour towards Stacey I find it hilarious that you can so easily excuse Shirley's blatant vileness towards Max.

Once again the Shirley apologists are out in force with their favourite excuse: "oh but what about Phil?"

Predictable.

Vile = nasty, unpleasant, horrible.

It's a very apt word to describe what Shirley did.

I love that you were slating Sharon for 'looking smug' last week, but when Shirley is blatantly provocative and downright nasty for no reason it's excused as "innocuous". The double standard is hilariously obvious. Had Sharon done what Shirley did last night you'd have called for her head.

But it's true isn't it? Every time Shirley does something despicable, some of her big fans try and turn the tables on certain other characters. I'm sure you know exactly who I'm talking about . I'm just as bad really but Shirley was genuinely toxic in that scene. Making fun of somebody working in the Fish&Chip shop and taking a photo was very low but that's typical Shirley.

I'm guilty of this as I have done this today but you do the same to a certain character - but it would be boring to have same opinions

Also means wicked, evil, vicious, depraved, sinful, offensive, repellent, corrupt, perverted. Whilst taking the pee out of him was not nice it's hardly up there with paedophilia and slavery.

Who said it was?

I wouldn't say Shirley's actions were "evil" but I would call them vicious, offensive and repellent. Vile is a perfectly appropriate word to use for such behaviour, especially as it was unprovoked.
