So you never saw the real 'good' Emmerdale. Pre March 2009 when the rot started to set in and got steadily worse. It's now at rock bottom.
I'm guessing you only read DS and none of the Emmerdale forums. Have you considered ceasing your inane sniping at the show and its producer and find something you actually enjoy watching? |

The last three episodes have seen year on year rises of over a million viewers and the best Thursday and Friday ratings since February and March. The show is firing on all cylinders at the moment and the next few weeks look very exciting too.
![]() This would suggest that, rather than ED gaining in people tuning in for the show, it's just gaining from the fact that more people are watching tv this year compared to this time last year. If the raw numbers rise AND the share rises - that's the real indication that ED is gaining viewers because of the storylines. It bodes well for the stunt week - unless the weather takes a turn for the better and the extra tv viewers fade away again. |

The show was unmissable under Gavin Blyth, God awful with Stuart Blackburn at the helm and now excellent with Kate Oates.

There's so many storylines and characters all connected to each other at the moment. So many twists and turns. I love it!
can't wait for the disaster week and aftermath. Happy it's happening before I go on holiday! |

After all this - I hope they can contain some decent stories in the aftermath, and maintain some of the humour! Sandy is always good for that in the Woolpack! |

i think it's consistently good quality, but there's far too much use of Ross, Debbie and Aaron. To me the only thing Ross is good for is seriously injuring people without blinking an eyelid (and yes I know he might be good for something else, but I'm not dwelling
) and Aaron - well even people with mental health problems sometimes have fun, or crack a smile. As for the horrific Aaron Robert relationship - there's nothing romantic, sexy(to me, but that's subjective) or entertaining about it - it's coming across as sordid and abusive. So while I always enjoy Emmerdale, I wouldn't say its at its best at the moment. I'm also not liking the way that they keep interlinking stories to the 'nth' degree these days. It's over complicated and seems to result in Ross getting shoe horned in to other characters' stories. I'm hoping for more Cain, Moira, Charity, Zak, Leyla, Megan, Joanie, Bernice and Andy over the next few weeks. I'm interested in the fallout of upcoming events for Moira and Cain (provided Cain doesn't die), Zak's always one of my faves, I'm looking forward

![]() ![]() Every single episode delivers. Great acting and I loved tonight's scenes especially the Paddy/Aaron and Robert/Andy ones. This week has been outstanding. Can't wait for the stunt!!! Best soap by far. Kate Oates is doing a brilliant job. I always do find Emmerdale super strong in the summer months. |

![]() You know nothing about me so don't assume to suit your own views. I did enjoy it, for many years. Pre GB. As I've said before, there are dedicated Emmerdale/Soap forums where everyone is fed up of it just now. DS and its tiny minority of posters, some genuine, some bandwaggoners. don't really count - the cast and crew are discouraged (to put it mildly) from reading it, yet several of them ( current and ex) are active members of other forums. albeit publicly anonymous The general opinion is that Emmerdale has lost its way, its integrity and its entertainment value. |

You only need to watch one a week to keep up - the others are just re-hashes of the same stuff.
Also Corrie often recycles the same scene in a slightly different setting. I rarely notice this with ED. Also the way ED intertwines storylines in order to connect everyone in the village is really superb. Subtle links are created to link characters and create great twists and turns to every storyline. |

How dare you say DS posters don't count - why, because they don't agree with your opinion? If the general opinion was the same as your own then Emmerdale wouldn't consistently be the second most watched programme on tv, it would have been axed around 2009, wouldn't it? |

You do seem to have a high opinion of your opinion though. The show is rating extremely well and many are enjoying it imo. DS is a large forum and these Emmerdale forums you talk about are only a tiny minority of people who watch it too. This week critics for all the main television and Soap magazines have hugely praised the episodes as has the critic for SoapScoop on DigitalSpy. You are obviously not enjoying the show but stating that last line is not the general opinion. It is your opinion.
The forums I'm talking about have well over 500 dedicated Emmerdale posters each and while that's maybe small in comparison to viewers DS probably has less than 50. |

I think this is nonsense. The one thing that sets Emmerdale apart from other soaps is that the pacing of storylines is just perfect. Time is taken when necessary. The Laurel alcoholism storyline was so realistically built up over months. Just compare it to Corrie's current gambling addiction for Carla which happened overnight and you can see the difference.
Also Corrie often recycles the same scene in a slightly different setting. I rarely notice this with ED. Also the way ED intertwines storylines in order to connect everyone in the village is really superb. Subtle links are created to link characters and create great twists and turns to every storyline. I don't have to watch Corrie, thankfully, so I don't. I do however know what's happening or about to. Carla is about the least interesting character on there. If you don't notice same scene recycling nowadays in Emmerdale then you can't have watched for long. Kate Oates has dug up old storyline after old storyline and just changed names. |

I've been watching Emmerdale for 20 years and I don't see these stories as any more repetitive than in the past. They are more engaging and intelligently structured and less ploddy than Emmerdale past. Name 5 original storylines Anita or Kath brought to the screen that hadn't been in some form or another on Emmerdale or a previous soap. The nature of soaps is you use key themes and apply it to your characters in different ways. Saying producers are recycling old stories is a really simplistic, cop out way of avoiding intelligent critique. |

There are no completely original soap storylines left. By recycled scenes I mean literally the same scene being played over and over again in a slightly different setting. It doesn't happen in Emmerdale. Stories actually progress at a good pace. |

I've watched Emmerdale (Or Emmerdale Farm at that point) since 1979, so I think I have got a good scope of the stories over the years.
The trouble is, and I've said it a thousand times, Emmerdale has moved over to one disaster after another. It seems to thrive on it and it's sad because it doesn't have to. And here we go again, another disaster about to loom on them. In 1993 we had the plane crash that devastated the village. They thought they'd never get over it....and it took months to recover and get back to normal. I'm quite confident that this disaster will be over and forgotten about in a week ready for the next heart stopping story.... In 1986 Pat Sugden (Roberts mother) died when her car avoided sheep in the road and it fell several feet over the cliff....there was no big explosions and no special effects, it just happened without any forward publicity. For me the shock value was a lot more memorable. |

Yes DS is, overall, taking into account all sections, a large forum, but in comparison there are very few Emmerdale posters and really not all that many soap forum posters and some overlap.
The forums I'm talking about have well over 500 dedicated Emmerdale posters each and while that's maybe small in comparison to viewers DS probably has less than 50. IMO no forum can provide more than a rough gauge of what viewers think, purely because by their very nature it's fans rather than general viewers who will take part. You refer to bandwagons but this could also occur on the forums you prefer. I've been turned off another forum because anyone positive was shouted down. Forums are fairly dodgy as sources of evidence of popularity because a. everyone is using pseudonyms so one person could have multiple accounts b discussions are not chaired and there is no way of ensuring that everyone who wishes to has spoken up, and not been discouraged c it's very difficult to evaluate the validity of anyone claiming to have specialist knowledge, because posters are often reluctant to give away any personal details, If you were publishing in a magazine you would declare any academic, professional or even personal experience which informed your opinion What I'm trying to say is that forums are not something producers should be guided by. Yes, it's nice for the cast and crew to read glowing feedback, and horrible for them to have negative reviews but forums are far too open to abuse for them to be any real barometer of viewers' opinions. To me they're nothing more than a bit of fun and a chance to exchange opinions for some viewers.None of them should carry any real weight with producers because as sources of general opinion every one of them is unquantifiable, and also producers should surelt have a fair amount of leeway to put their own artistic vision in place, not pander to the widely differing views of what 'our Emmerdale' is? Because to do that would be to try to please everyone and end up pleasing no one. |
