IMO no forum can provide more than a rough gauge of what viewers think, purely because by their very nature it's fans rather than general viewers who will take part.

You refer to bandwagons but this could also occur on the forums you prefer. I've been turned off another forum because anyone positive was shouted down. Forums are fairly dodgy as sources of evidence of popularity because a. everyone is using pseudonyms so one person could have multiple accounts
b discussions are not chaired and there is no way of ensuring that everyone who wishes to has spoken up, and not been discouraged
c it's very difficult to evaluate the validity of anyone claiming to have specialist knowledge, because posters are often reluctant to give away any personal details, If you were publishing in a magazine you would declare any academic, professional or even personal experience which informed your opinion

What I'm trying to say is that forums are not something producers should be guided by. Yes, it's nice for the cast and crew to read glowing feedback, and horrible for them to have negative reviews but forums are far too open to abuse for them to be any real barometer of viewers' opinions. To me they're nothing more than a bit of fun and a chance to exchange opinions for some viewers.None of them should carry any real weight with producers because as sources of general opinion every one of them is unquantifiable, and also producers should surelt have a fair amount of leeway to put their own artistic vision in place, not pander to the widely differing views of what 'our Emmerdale' is? Because to do that would be to try to please everyone and end up pleasing no one.”

Beautifully put, and spot on.

What complete pish about being told not to go on Digital Spy. All forums are a bit of fun, but definitely not to be used for direction. We do our own research to gauge opinion and get feedback, from a much more rounded demographic.

Thank you for accusing me of lying.
It was info from 2 actors (both current) discussing the fact on another, much friendlier, and very discreet, restricted access forum.

You said "the cast and crew are discouraged (to put it mildly) from reading it"

What does that even mean? Who do you suppose is doing this more than mild discouragement? It's ridiculous. And it is either a lie or you're being hoodwinked.

If anything, a couple of over sensitive actors may have complained about being slated online and they've been advised not to look if they don't have a thick skin.

Absolute pish.

I remember there being a better balance of things though, Blythe Era Fantastic!. I'd hate for ED going for the sensationalism stuff too frequently because they don't need to they're better than that. What is Emmerdale? To me it had its USP being set in the countryside, it was the story based on the have and the have nots (rich and poor) social division, farming in amongst the 'crime'. It has warmth, cosiness, wit and humour and well thought out scripting and dialogue. While I have enjoyed Robert-Aaron. You've got Debbie/Ross/Pete AND Leyla/Jai too many affairs in one go? Having said that it is still IMO the best British soap at this time.

I bet you love a good conspiracy Wyezedbut can you understand that that's probably for their own good rather than a direct criticism of all posters on DS? if I was an actor I wouldn't read public access forums. My workplace is regularly reviewed online and I don't read any of the posts in case someone says something horrible about me
I think the majority of posters in ED threads are respectful and friendly. I'm presuming what you're going onto is some sort of professional, industry forum where actors might feel free to moan about their detractors confidentially? I'd hardly expect any of them to enjoy using any of the public forums, I certainly wouldn't if I was them

I think all the affairs are a deliberate ploy to send things on a collision course for the summer stunt. Crime for me is ED's USP along with the village feel and links between characters which mean storylines can be intertwined so effortlessly. The village immediately gives ED a more realistic feel and character interactions than EE and CS.

You are coming across as though what you require from a soap is necessarily what every one else *should* require from it.

I'm loving ED now. I loved ED in the 90s and I loved it in the late 80s. Too young to go back any further. I have no doubt I'll love it in the 2020s too. I love the fact that it changes and adapts.

You should join the dedicated Emmerdale Forum site. Nobody has a good word to say about the show on there. You'd be amongst your own.

Both you and spunger make some valid and interesting points, but they're lost amongst the misery and negativity and hounding of individual actors.

I loved the Blyth era but not everyone did. I do agree that at the moment there's too much crime and I'm not keen on the overuse of Robert and Aaron, but then again I daresay lots of viewers hate Cain and Moira -stories- the weirdos

I've been wondering for a while if Spunger and Wyezed are one person using two different accounts as their posts are so similar.

That's not it, though, is it?

- Robert/Aaron
- Cain/Chrissie
- Leyla/Jai
- Ross/Debbie
- James/Emma (one night stand, but broke up Chas and James/storyline centred around sleeping together)
- Vanessa/Adam
- Upcoming Laurel/Ashley/Harriet triangle, no doubt
- Recently had Ali sleep with Dan

It's just absurd the amount of one night stands/affairs the show has. It does absolutely nothing to help the show. It really irritates me that we have no strong couples in soap anymore who don't have to 'tackle' such nonsense. The 'staple' of affairs is completely overused and surely we're all numb from it now? Does anyone care? Does anyone NOT roll their eyes when a man and woman share a scene together that isn't husband and wife because we all know what's coming? Two months later, and we're proven right... and most of the time they've 'fallen in love' despite the only thing we see of their relationship is ripping each others clothes off.

I know all the triangles right now are purely for the stunt (that's what I believe, anyway), so I'm just hoping once the stunt is over, all these idiotic affairs will be, too.
Until then, though, I just can't enjoy it very much. 2014 was very strong and I never missed an episode, this year though, I've been skipping the odd episode here and there over the past few months and if it wasn't for believing these contrived, rubbish affairs were purely for the upcoming stunt, I'm sorry to say that I would've given up on it. However, because of the stunt, I've forced myself to continue to watch and I just hope the stunt proves to be worth it, and that, more importantly, going forward, they sort this mess out and we get some 'proper' couples who can do more than cheat on each other... or I might be out for good.

Hurry back, Charity and Nicola, because no matter what's going on, I can always rely on you to bring the show to life.

to be fair the Cain Chrissie kiss wasn't an affair just a stupid, angry, petulant mistake on both their parts.

Lol, let it go Andy. Their opinions are no more or less valid than anyone else's on here. Stop obsessing and having constant digs at them and try and concentrate on the show instead; you'll be much happier imo.

If they stop repeating themselves then so will I. And by the way, I'm perfectly happy and have written many positive posts about ED on here, to the extent that I was recently called a troll for being so positive. I really can't win can I - I'm either too positive or too negative.

My mistake; I thought they slept together. Like I said, missed a few eps and that was one of them.

I'm just really hacked off with the show for going this route. One or two of these affair storylines dominating throughout the year has me reaching for alcohol to get me through, but having a dozen over a few months just to set up a stunt? I thought Emmerdale was much better than that.

They've turned Victoria into a complete mug, too. She's always been independent and not needed some pathetic waste of space to help her get by; giving Adam a second chance was dumb enough, giving him a third one after sleeping with Vanessa is just damn right annoying. I just wish for once we'd get a strong female who doesn't need to hook up to losers to make themselves 'happy', but then it comes back to the writing/storylines because half the men wouldn't be losers if they had some original thoughts and didn't just think to have everyone sleep with each other.

Actually, thinking about it, Chas got rid of James, so at least that's a start...
