Aw, the poor thing, she puts so much of her energy into flapping those big ass cheeks in the hope of attracting a mate. If they were giving out awards for sheer frantic desperation she'd be the out and out winner.

The male counterpart of Nicki Minaj would be waving his knob about on stage and rapping about it's proportions, something like, 'get over here bitch, I'm going to impale you on my eiffel tower.'
We're being denied this other perspective when you think about it, time the male rappers started to punt their wares also.
Get those thrusting dangly bits into gear rappers!

Yeah, like 'Wrecking Ball' was the height of artistic authenticity and originality.

Agreed.the racism thing was such bollocks-especially cos Beyoncé got a Best Vid nomination didn't she??
Frankly the vid was trashy & soft core porn & the song was a mess. It wasn't a hit was it?? Where did it ever go to in the charts??
This is an artist having a strop cos she's being ignored. Try less of the porn honey-it'll work wonders!!

Miley Cyrus does a soft core porn vid which was largely irrelevant to the song and wins the best vid award. Yet Nicki Minaj does a soft core porn which is funny and relevant but gets ignored, is that not the point? The quality or popularity of the song isn't strictly relevant because it is about the video.

Good thing Taylor Swift's 'Shake it off' wasn't nominated.

Her argument was total bollocks and it really annoys me how people seem to have taken her side. I can't speak for black people as I am white, but I really fail to see how black artists are at a disadvantage in the VMAs seeing as half the nominees are black or mixed race?!

There's more too it than that. I think It's supposed to be about our attitudes towards 'sexually liberated' BLACK curvy women vs white skinny women who act exactly the same. Miley is white and skinny, she twerks and strips off in her videos and she gets an award but Nicki Minaj does the same and she's the subject of so much verbal abuse and disgust. I wouldn't say this is just a black problem though to be honest like she's making it out to be, I'd say it's actually more a sexist thing. Miley got that award for wrecking ball because her nakedness was supposed to represent her 'vulnerability' so many people believe her video to be more credible than Minaj's because of the underlying subject matter but in general and most of the time women who choose themselves to strip off in their own music videos are widely critisised by both women and men, yet when men use other women as sexual props in their videos, the comments and attitudes towards the video are mostly pretty different. Take Robin Thickes Blurred Lines for example, apart from the feminists who believed the whole song to be 'rapey' the majority of people instead of feeling disgust at the music video (that uses fully naked women as dolls) most stood up for it and instead of saying things like 'trashy hoe' etc. about the women prancing around naked in the video, instead the overwhelming majority were just mad at 'those feminazi prudes' Basically, when a woman strips in her own music video she's a whore, bad influence on society etc. yet when men use naked or sexually provocative women in their music videos, suddenly everybody is saying "Get over yourselves, sex is a natural part of life, stop being so prudish, stop trying to ruin good things for the rest of us, you're just jealous because you could never look that good naked" all those kind of comments. Even though I say this is more a sexist problem though, there is far more widespread hatred for a black women who acts just as provocative as a white woman, so there is still some racism in there.

You're right it wasn't but many people believed it to be for some reason.

What about THIS????

On the subject of Miley Cyrus, the fact is that even if she is rewarded by the industry by receiving an award for her song, many, many people find her to be a repugnant article, acting like a promiscuous bloke and pervert, pushing an agenda of precocious sexuality toward young kids so I don't know where the commenter is coming from suggesting that she is more 'credible' as an artist as Nicki Minaj when she is as universally disliked as she is liked, by the simple minded, imho.

The thing is that Miley Cyrus does actually 'sing' and Nicki doesn't sing. This means that they can't be compared for their skills as performers, only contrasted.
The only thing about them that could be held up for comparison must be the twerking surely?

Women stripping off and simulating sex on stage are just playing into the hands of the people who justify the men who like to perform on stage with women who act like nothing more than sexual props. Two halves of the same coin.
Women who are 'displaying their sexuality' aren't acting like women at all. Real women aren't sexually aggressive and don't feel the need to be, especially in public. Like I said before, in nature it's supposed to be the male of the species who demonstrates his allure to the female not the other way around.
A woman who is flapping her fat ass up and down to get male attention is suggesting that she is having to try really hard to get that attention in the first place and that implies she isn't actually sexy or attractive at all and is having to go to extreme lengths to try and convince the object of her attention otherwise.

In the end no one here is being liberated, but everyone is being demeaned and stripped of their personality.
And Miley Cyrus as about as sexy as a badly behaved troll.

I don't see what one being a singer and the other being a rapper has to do with a judgment on the content of the video notwithstanding the prudishness and your hatred of rap.

Well one video was sung and the other was rapped for a start!
In my opinion Miley Cyrus deserves more credit for being able to utilise her voice with skill but then again some people are happy with semi rhyming verbal diahorea, each to his own.

Prudishness?????? At least I know the difference between what really is sexy and was is masturbation substitute for the imaginationally and socially limited.

Yes, Miley is a singer and Nicki is a rap artist, what's that got to do with the quality or subject of the respective videos?

It's interesting that a liberated male artist exhibiting their sexuality results in videos of women being objectified while a liberated female artist exhibiting her sexuality also results in videos of women being objectified.

It doesn't really add up.

Female objectification is a well-established idea in art history and visual culture.
John Berger resurrected the idea with his series 'Ways of Seeing' in the 70s.

Nicki Minaj is more clued in than you think.

Yes, she's one of those acts who looks rough, makes rather poor music, then blames being black for low interest. Not that I can stand Taylor Swift, either. Awful, saccharine, sappy tripe.

I agree. MC is the prime example of how many US female acts have ditched any trace of class, and somehow been convinced that exploiting the crudest sexuality is the height of liberation!

I'm not sure who the other acts you are thinking about are but Nicki Minaj looks great, is very sexy, very funny and has made a few good rap songs. The point here is not about her music and sales, although to some degree it is about her looks.

The point is what criteria is the video of the year awarded, what makes one music video better than another? And if it is largely subjective then Nicki is perfectly entitled to query the nominations.

Bit of a petty move from Taylor Swift...

It would be lovely if they could all act like adults now.

Thousands of music videos have come out in the last year, not every artist can be nominated for an award, but Nicki is the only one throwing a tantrum like a child. Who cares about the VMAs? MTV ceased being relevant when they started to care more about reality television than music. It's bizarre that Nicki is getting so wound up. She's Kanye West only with a vagina.
