I asked the same question a few weeks back. I don't think anyone knew for sure. If he isn't returning I can't see why DS wouldn't have been told about the actor pulling out or the show axing the character. He's a pretty well known name and face in soap and a casting that many would be keen to hear news on. It's not like some unknown random extra turning up and disappearing who nobody would care about.
