External camera to use with iPad mini
Eater Sundae

My daughter has an iPad mini. She is facetiming friends, and also producing the odd blog video. We are wanting to improve the quality of the videos (both video quality and sound quality), including tripod mounting for a better camera position. We can use a separate camera to record the video and then transfer it to the iPad mini, but I was wondering whether a dedicated webcam style of camera linked directly by cable to the iPad mini might be a better way forward. Does anyone know a suitable webcam that is compatible with the iPad mini and is likely to meet our needs. Thanks.

I've never seen an external camera for an iPad, so it don't think they exist. You can get an external microphone for the sound.

You could get an iPhone or an iPod touch and record video on there, and then edit it on the iPad.

Does anyone know if there is any terminology in a data sheet for a webcam which would show me that it is iPad compatible (other than the obvious words "iPad compatible")?

You can't just plug any webcam into an iPad - it won't work. Even the 'camera connection kit' from Apple for stills cameras is very fussy. As above, I think it is impossible, and a quick look on Amazon etc. gives no results.

It's a shame that article doesn't have a date on it. However, it does say "Information in this article applies to iPads running iOS 6. It may vary slightly or significantly with other versions or products." Now we are on iOS 8 I think I lot of the externally connected gadgets have stopped working.
